read the posts again :) - its NOT Lidl , but a local shop

Product was marked-down so I presume store knew it was past its date ( and it was possibly also described as such )

whoops. My mistake. I think I got lidl from DPJames.
  • did the store have a sign saying why it was reduced as a lot of store do say out of date and thats why its reduced

Anyone else remember they didn't even put date on pickle? Oh for those sensible days.

I can remember when they didn't put dates on anything.

Me and a few girls at work were discussing this just earlier in the week. We were saying how vinegar and salt never used to have a BBE/expiration date - and how it was ironic given both are used to preserve food themselves.

Doesn't pickle - up to a point - improve with age?

my mum bought a pickle from a foreign food shop as it was marked down to a £1. When she got home I noticed the use by date was May 2013.

I know its only a £1 but what is the law on this? I said she should take it back, but does she have a right? I mean a month out of date is acceptable but a year is taking the mickey.

Absolutely fine..its been brined for an extra year and will taste better for it. You could sell it on ebay and maybe make a profit even. The shop isn't the one trying to take it?!

I would happily eat it. Would you like to swap some of yours for my 4 1/2 year old homemade cranberry sauce - lots of orange, spice and vintage port? :)

I may eat it, but I certainly wouldn't buy it.

"best before" can continue to be sold after the date - otherwise it would be costing "Approved Food" a fortune to stay in business.
