desperate to leave Eon, but storage heaters/very old meter

  • At a guess, e7. Is there no local gas supply, that's the cheapest way to heat a home. Do you know how much this will all cost and if the owner of the property will consent?

Thanks Bluebirdman :-) It's sheltered accommodation, housing association. Apparently there are gas pipes that could be used, but there isn't the budget for the housing association to fit central heating. It's only been talked about very vaguely as a remote option.

Hoping the housing association electrician doesn't involve a charge, about any work needed regarding changing meter, but am also more seriously considering moving. Eon have left a phone message, so I'm going to call them tomorrow. If they agree about a meter change, and it's not going to cost about electricals, it would be worth doing something, incase I do stay here, or for the remaining time.

Thanks for confirmation about E7.

If you currently have storage heaters and switch to single rate from E10, then your heating and hot water costs will rise about 300%. Why would you even consider switching to anything but E7 with this form of heating?
Sort out your metering/tariff first, then look at supplier options. Your dislike of E.ON seems to be blinding you to the real priorities here.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks macman  Just wanted to be totally sure, as I'd seen threads where some said changing to standard surprisingly worked out better, but had felt that probably wouldn't be ideal. Thanks for confirming and for your advice. Glad you said about priorities, as you're right that it's saving money (and the right supplier) that must be prioritised, rather than rushing and falling on a sword. Worst year I've ever had with an energy supplier, and worries me deeply that they're so openly disinterested.

Never with storage heaters catalina, maybe if they had really good insulation and switched to direct electric heating.

Your best bet is to stick with a time-of-use tariff such as E7 or E10.

You'd anyway need to switch your heating to panel heaters to use single rate power: NSH's are pointless without E7 or E10.

Thanks macman  Contacted housing association who are going to get back to me about whether they can do any work needed regarding meter change (others in this sheltered housing cul-de-sac have changed meters etc, so it may be possible). Once I hear back about that, things can hopefully move forward about a meter change to E7.

I've just spoken with the eon resolution team, who were very polite, and explained that they couldn't send a bill due to having to implement (rebuild) a new pricing structure, which I understood is due to changes the government is making energy companies make. They were very helpful, and I emphasized that a letter sent out about this, at the time, would have saved a lot of difficulties, on both sides ultimately. He said he would pass that on. He said to call him regarding anything about the meter change, and, if not, he'll call next Friday to keep me updated about the bill side of things. He confirmed they're changing any Heatwise meters for free, and that I'm on the PSR list.

Relieved to take action and that things are moving forward! :j Thanks again :)
