Paid money to Wrong Card

I recently took out a loan to cover my Barclaycard and make things easier for me. I got the money and promptly paid the cash in to what I thought was the right card. I say “thought” as I had a payment set up to Barclaycard on my on line banking already and in my haste to pay off my card I used that.

This payment was made on the 9th July.

Today I went on line to check everything was ok only to discover that my card had not been cleared as I thought. After making a few calls I have discovered that the details I had were for an old card going back 6 or more years which belonged to my mum . This card is no longer in use yet the money I sent has gone in to this account.

I have contacted Barclaycard who have been of no help saying they can’t do anything . I contacted my bank Halifax and they are saying they can “TRY” to get the money back

I am extremely worried as this is make or break for me. When the bank say try it does not fill me with confidence that I will get this cash back

Does anyone have any experience of this who could offer advice or help

Which card did it go to? Have you contacted that lender?

It went to a very old Barclaycard which is no longer in use that once belonged to my mum

I have contacted both the Halifax and Barclaycard

Can you get your mum to contact Barclaycard?
If it's her account that has been credited, I would have thought that she's the best person to say that it shouldn't have been.
  • Hi

Last year my mother in-law accidentally made a payment from her Santander on-line banking to my father in-laws credit card that had not been used for a few years she did not realise that this had happened as she thought it was her card set up on on-line banking anyway a few days after this happened a letter arrived from my father in-laws credit card company telling him that a payment had been received on to his card and as it had not been used for many years they wanted him to call to tell them why he had done this and put a credit balance on to the card . once explained the card company arranged for the money to be returned to the mother in-laws bank and all was cleared up in a matter of days .

So my advice to you is if possible get your mum to ring the company up and explain to them what has happened and hopefully they will sort it out for you .

What worries me the most is that Halifax said that they could only try to get the money back and that they may not be able to.

I understand this is my fault but can't get my head around that if a payment has been sent to the wrong place why it will be so hard to get it back - they are saying up to 4 weeks and i have to wait to get a letter

    Thank you

My mum did call the Barclay card and what makes this situation worse is that after a divorce my mum let this card go to a recovery agent so the money is somewhere in cyber space. Barclay card are saying it won't go to the agency for at least 20 plus days and there is nothing that can be done

I really feel like i won't be getting this back and i really need it to pay off my card so i can be free of it

If the card does actually have a balance owing on it, you may have trouble getting it back. It would be fairly simple if the account was closed and with a zero balance, but that's not the case here.

The money was paid in error . I can't see how the company can hold on to the money when it was paid in error to that account.

I did not even know about my mums card until today. It must have been something i paid in to some several years ago and not used since

Our names are different so i am hoping the bnank can see me error and help me get it back

If the company say no is there anything i can do ?
