The spare wheel is not a testable item and so the tester does not look for it but may comment if he notices it is defective whilst looking at something else.

Spare tyre is testable if it's present.

If it isn't then it's not testable.

At least that is how it used to be.

The spare wheel wheel condition has never been tested, only it's security is possibly tested when externally mounted (underneath or on the boot for example)

Because removing a DPF is against Construction & Use regulations.

And when you consider people scaremonger on here regarding Winter tyres being a declarable modification what do you think an Insurance company faced with having to pay out a chunk of money will make of such an undeclared modification?

Do you think they will offer you more?

Or perhaps if you were unlucky enough to be involved in a collision simply say your car was not compliant to C&U Regs and you are on your own, then sue you for the 3rd parties expences and cancel your policy?

Tell insurance "exhaust system modified" and then you're covered.

You need to comply with C&U regs to be legal, but you don't need to comply with them to be covered for insurane.

It's never been that way as far as i remember.
Before the computer based test a lot of rogue garages would fail for things it shouldn't, such as spare wheels.

If that were the case, a car could fail if it got a puncture on the way to the MOT, and the spare was fitted. When is it a spare wheel, and when is is 'luggage'?

Many years ago, my father's landrover failed on a UJ joint on the front propshaft. The garage lent him a spanner, and he removed the propshaft, for a pass.

I've just checked, and a car should fail the MOT with a space-saver tyre fitted, so if you get a puncture on the way to the MOT you're sunk on a modern car.
