DPF removal and MOT failure - going beyond a visual check?
;discussion/5017315]I found this statement on a government website:
"the inspection will initially be restricted to a visual examination for the presence of a DPF "
This is all part of EU law. Eventually the MOT test will involve reading OBD for fault codes and DPF software presence, plus exhaust gas particulate matter test.
In Germany, for example, for cars first registered after January 2006 no exhaust emissions measurement is necessary, they get all the info from the OBD, including check for presence of DPF filters.
However, they are now going back to exhaust gas checks to actually check the particulate matter levels. Apparently OBD exhaust data is not very reliable for diesel cars."Retail is for suckers"

Just as well my TDi came with a cat and not a DPF then.
No real way of telling if a cat has been gutted as there's no sensor going to it for OBD to check anything. All your base are belong to us.0 -

As the genuine Lexia diagnostic kit is dealer only, which means that yours is probably a Chinese copy, there is no official written instructions. There is a dealer only training course but unless you're a Peugeot/citreon dealer you can't join it.
You will almost certainly find how to instructions, loading the software and using the equipment, on you tube.
Incidentally using the long USB lead often causes a failure in communications, the short lead should work OK.
PS I think that's what your post meant.0 -

The DPF is usually as well as the cat, they are designed to reduce different types of harmful emissions.0 -

This is forecast to come in, in 2018:

A little OT but worth pointing out that link shows maybe the first bit of common sense to ever come out of the EU:matters_of_testing wrote:- Rules on deficiencies
– Major – re test
– Dangerous – the Member State may prohibit the use of the vehicle on public roads
So, for minor things (presumably like screenwash, wiper blades, lightbulbs etc), just get told they're faulty and to get them fixed. Wonder how UK Plc will manage to screw that part up?0 -

Yes, but I'd missed that link from mrmot last time round, and the no retest on minor faults idea is a good one, so not going to complain about the resurrection too much
Now, about checking your tyres........ :rotfl:0 -
The Spanish will be spitting feathers. Their ITV (MOT) requirements are that if something is fitted to a vehicle, then it must work. If it doesn't, you have 48 hours to get it fixed and return for a re-test.
As for emmisions tests for diesels in the UK. It is amazing just how many MOT testers get it wrong.
The official test (at present) is a smoke only observation. This is done by fully-revving the engine 3 times, looking for smoke on acceleraion and decceleration. The test is done at working temperature.
So many testers use the exhaust gas anylizer to take a reading (as is correct for petrol cars).Never Knowingly Understood.
