I'm hoping to have 8 days on the island, I would love to do more and the cost isn't an issue, its time off work and the in-laws being left with our children that is the problem.
I would love someone closer, but I just can't find anything that is either as good, or does not have a severe risk of rain/ hurricanes, all of the hot tropical places seem to be in rainy season.
I'll admit I have done any research, but I cannot believe that to be the case?
What about Vis or Hvar in Croatia, Icaria in Greece or Gozo in Malta? There most be plenty of other little island like those in Europe?
Also why are your children looking after your in-laws?0 -
Each to their own but I really couldn't imagine being over 30 hours away from my children. I've been overseas without them, but always somewhere where there were frequent flights home. We went to the Maldives in June and the weather was great, I've heard of people going in March and having atrocious weather. Same hoes for when we went to the Cook Islands, we had fabulous weather, but the week before (April) had been really rainy.
Good luck, I know how hard it is to find the perfect place after the Maldives. Tbh from what you've said I'd go for the Maldives and risk the rain....0 -

I suppose your right, maybe I'm just being a bit spoilt, I just want the perfect holiday and we have been picturing the solitude for so long, other places just seem too busy. I will check out your recommendations tonight.Saving and spending in equal measure0 -

The kids are in safe hands, we are lucky to have a really close family who we see daily, so they probably won't even miss us! (We will miss them though!)
Maybe I should just chance it and go Maldives, it would cost a lot less too.
I've been like this for months now, just can't make up my mind!Saving and spending in equal measure0 -

Interestingly, the Nakaiy calendar says the following about the period I want to travel: Calm and dry, with lots of sunshine.
Is the Maldives back on? Maybe it is.Saving and spending in equal measure0 -
We got back two weeks ago, overall, weather was pretty good, probably slightly better than we had in June 2012. Out of 12 days we had 8 pure sunshine with two half sun/half over cast and two over cast.
If you do want Maldives I would suggest finding out what's available ASAP, I know the adults only island we went to is almost fully booked through to November!
Very happily married on 10th April 2013

Thanks and glad you enjoyed yourself!
I think I have swung back in favour of Maldives again!
I was chatting to the chap we know out there, he said its still a bit unpredictable, but expects pretty much all sun with the odd shower. As long as the house reef is good and close, not a boat ride away as might be too choppy at times.
I've got an ironically big "short" list for Maldives, so I'm going to go back over it again and see prices and availability, we'll get somewhere I'm sure, probably cheap as we can leave it very last minute on a package deal and hopefully have a few options and get a bargain.
I'm also now looking at those flights and thinking that is short haul compared to Fiji!Saving and spending in equal measure0 -
We went to Fiji and it was amazing, very relaxed and great snorkelling off a very small island. But...I would not spend 2 days flying/travelling to get there, then depending what time you land, a night in a hotel in Nadi then half a day travelling by coach and boat to the island. Then 2 days jet lag waking up in middle of the night and sleeping all day before I felt 'normal' then to fly back again!
Sorry I sound negative, we had the holiday of our lives with our children but had 4 weeks either side Fiji in NZ and OZ. I reckon you could def' get a small island closer, still with great snorkelling and beautiful beaches.
Good luck with your search
