Fiji does sound a long way to go for 2 weeks, especially if you want to do it as cheaply as possible without any stopover on the way there or back. Over 36 hours in an economy seat wouldn't be the way I'd want to start a honeymoon.

I went to the Maldives in August and all I can remember is the odd shower every couple of hours, which was beautifully refreshing really. We ate every meal out in the open air and never got rained on. There was nothing quite as relaxing as sitting at the bar having a cocktail with a tropical downpour going on.

Luck of the draw I suppose, but the weather at this time of year was never an issue for us.

There seems to be a variety of options here, none of them particularly cheap!

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences?

My first search found £1188pp in September with Cathay via HK, but 22 hours in the air? You'd have to really like Fiji!

It was on my shortlist and as beautiful as it is, its just not the Maldives and doesn't seem as secluded or private.

That's what worries me, spots of rain I could live with, but it really worries me it would rain for a week and there seems to be an equal chance of either happening. If I wanted a week of rain I would stay here and enjoy the summer!

I'll put some pictures up later, this place will blow you away. Private island with your own staff, it doesn't get much better than that!

  • Did you say for a week?!

When I went travelling I loved Fiji, the Yasawa’s in particular are breathtaking – this is me on a hammock on one of the islands:

But I wouldn’t go all that way for a week. I’d find somewhere a lot closer, save money and stay a couple of weeks!

You said the island is very cheap, is there no way you can stay for two weeks? 20 hours or so travel each way at that airfare cost for a week makes me break into a sweat.

I'm hoping to have 8 days on the island, I would love to do more and the cost isn't an issue, its time off work and the in-laws being left with our children that is the problem.

I would love someone closer, but I just can't find anything that is either as good, or does not have a severe risk of rain/ hurricanes, all of the hot tropical places seem to be in rainy season.
