I like the 'debates' which always ensue.

As would the site owners as it is all traffic to the site :money:

No, but once an OP feels that their question or comment has been answered , then as far as the OP is concerned the thread is redundant and anything else is superfluous.

I don't know; that seems to give the OP "ownership" of a thread if they get to decide when it ends. Personally, my opinion is that once you start a thread, the thread belongs to the forum and, by default, all of the members, not just you, so why should the OP close down a thread which might have become something different (and unintended) that is helping others or providing a good discussion.

When starting a new thread, I think everybody needs to accept that they do not have control over that thread and they may not get to choose what direction the conversation goes in.

There are innumerable threads when the OP asks a perfectly innocent or legitimate question and very soon a mass bullying session begins as to the OPs motives for opening a thread.
Report to forum team. Particularly important if the OP is a newbie being bitten.

I agree with the OP here. Many threads have been started, where some posters get very sarcastic, pedantic, rude, offensive and quite abusive, mocking the OP, and encouraging their forum buddies to join in with the mocking.

I have asked twice for a thread of mine to be removed (though it was a while back,) and because of the posters that come on trolling threads now, and saying nasty things that are utterly unnecessary and unhelpful, I never start one now. If I did want any help, I would make up an AE and ask under that name, and I have noticed that a LOT of people have been making up new usernames this past few months to get advice, because they know how certain people behave on here.

I was pleasant and polite when I first joined here, but when several people were rude to me for absolutely NO reason (in several threads I started asking for advice; ) I just give as good as I get now if someone is rude. I know that if I started a thread now asking for help for something, that within the first 20 posts, someone would say something horrible. And I have seen this happen to many other people too.

It's particularly worse late evening/late at night, when more trolls and trouble makers seem to be on. And trolls aren't always new usernames either. I see a few usernames that have been registered here a while, who seem to love putting baiting and flaming comments that they know will upset people.

And I have also noticed that the same half a dozen or so people feel the need to come onto most threads and put something negative and unpleasant, and then say stuff like 'I tell it like it is' and 'if you don't like to hear stuff you wanna hear, then don't come on a public message forum,' and 'some people don't like to hear the truth.' Some posters actually only seem to post to have a snipe at someone.

One particular poster made me LOL the other day on a thread on DT, when she said to someone ' do you know how offensive it is to me that you said that?' when this particular poster is one of the rudest posters on MSE. Like many rude obnoxious posters who see themselves as 'just being honest,' they don't like it when someone is rude to them! Or when someone says something THEY don't like, and they act the victim at the drop of a hat!

I have even seen someone post a message and then delete it, and someone somehow manages to capture what they said and reposts it! Even though the poster wanted their post deleted. Someone will delete a post, and say 'deleted, forget it..,' and someone will say 'I missed it, what did it say?' and someone comes along and reposts what the poster deleted. And they are so full of themselves for managing to repost what the poster said, like they're so clever, that they managed to pull one over on the poster that deleted their post! If someone deletes their OWN POST, why does anyone think they have a God given right to repost it?!

So yes, a poster SHOULD be able to lock their own thread whenever they want (or delete it themselves,.) If it's their own thread, why shouldn't they have the 'last word?!' Often if it's say a Friday evening, you could wait a couple of days before your thread can be deleted or locked. Giving the trolls and bullies loads of time to mock and berate the OP before the thread can be locked or deleted.

  • Hi ljonski

We don't plan to add that as a function. Discussions are there for everyone and don't belong to a particular user.

Hopefully everyone's here to save money and help keep the forum friendly. If you see a post that isn't, though, please remember to use the report button.

    Andrea :)

Hi Andrea, sorry this is directed as you, being a newbee. I have posted two great products on sale by an online company. I have bought them and just wanted to share the news on the forum. Which I used to love. Twice my posts have been taken down and I have been called a troll. How can I be called both these things I have only posted a couple of times. The latest post taken down was answered by a member clearly posting lots about M&S weirdly enough. I have emailed support - just a bit disappointed. Any comment...... nice ones only please.

Wouldn't this then create less work for the site team if we could close our own threads?
