    Good morning,

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and for sharing kitchen stories! I am pleased that DH and I are on speaking terms again. The strain of the unfinished building situation is really taking its toll on our relationship, we agreed, and he apologised profusely for the horrible thing he said.

More rain today *groan* means the salads still haven't been planted in the allotment. Just as well they are living salads so I shall give them a watering and if I see that we cannot plant them we will have to eat them as "cut and come again".

Today OS plan starts with the usual breakfast- and packed lunch-making, followed by a couple of hours babysitting, easy peasy as I asked her to drop the girls at mine, as I am waiting for a delivery.

I am, in fact, waiting for my new range cooker to be delivered! That tomorrow is going to be fitted by electrician and plumber! Very exciting and one step further towards having a kitchen. They will (please God) also fit cooker hood, radiator, wash machine and dishwasher in place so we will regain some space in the garden (dishwasher) and DS bedroom (washing machine)! And hopefully will fit all the sanitary ware in the shower room, sink and toilet and all the taps. I shall then be delighted to see the back of them.

Guess what, the ironing hasn't been done, why are the ironing fairies not doing their job? I wonder! I might have to tackle that today, as tomorrow and Thursday the banging will be driving me out of the house.

It might turn up to be a NSD after all, if I don't get a spending raptus to compensate for the bleakness of the cold and rainy, kitchenless August day, and go on a splurge. Not like it would take me long, I am practically at the end of my tether and about to snap. Wish me luck, and self control, and serenity!

    Have a good day.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

A very OS day for me yesterday. I brought the ironing up to date, cleaned the oven, made some bread rolls and a loaf and stretched the little bit of turkey I had left from Sunday's turkey thigh roast by some magical means to make rissoles for dinner. Lunch was beans on toast. Cardigans went on instead of heating and not a penny was spent.

Today? Well I'm going to take the slippers which had me sliding down the stairs two weeks ago, to the shoe repairer to see if he can put on stick on soles to make them skid free. Do they still make stick on soles? I haven't seen them for ages. If they can't be done (they're not straight forward) then I'm going to have to go to the specialist shoe shop I use for my very difficult feet, and buy some more slippers. It certainly will not be and NSD as they cost £35 a throw but do last well, I've had the current ones for 4 years. The shop is in Stratford and I live in Birmingham so that will be a day out for me, well it is my birthday tomorrow, might even get a meal out if I play my cards right, otherwise it will be an OS picnic in the car.

  • CATERINA have a lot of long distance hugs poppet, not easy being like Dido in the ruins of Carthage when you're in your own home is it love? Just hold the thought that when it's finally all finished you can shut out the world and the workmen and sit in your lovely new kitchen and just DO NOTHING but look at the beauty and listen to the silence whenever you want to sniffing the wonderful aromas from home cooking. You'll get there and life will be back to normal again, just keep hold of that thought and you'll be OK, much sympathy, Lyn xxx.
  • Hi all,

I am too finding my way back to a more os way of life. I used to be on this board every day, then I had 3 babies in 3.5 years and things have been rather hectic. So with baby no 2 starting school next Tues (eeek, where has the time gone?!) I though it would be a good time to get back into the way of things. Oh, and DH is going self employed in a matter of weeks, things look good at the moment, but who knows what the future holds?

I bake my own bread, and make my own yoghurt. I keep a spending diary and try not to use the tumble dryer. A rotary line and a log burner definitely help with that :)

What I need to do is become better at meal planning again. I still do it, but my weekly bill at Morrisons is creeping up and up. Spent £100 this week, which is way over budget!

I look forward to being a more regular member of this board again, you are all such a friendly, helpful bunch xxx

Home made cheese and onion quiche has been a meat free staple here over the summer. Come the next few weeks I won't do them as often but it's worth saying how utterly delicious they are - shop bought pale in comparison ;):)

That's given me an idea fuddle. I do make quiche every now and then so will make it again this week, but a cheese and onion one :)

We started on our kitchen this weekend. Hopefully by xmas it will be done. The problem with my OH is that he is great at starting a project but hopeless at finishing it. Lets have a competition to see whose kitchen is finished first.x

My OH is like that :D It has taken a while to get the bedroom floor sanded but it's done now as a friend came round to help yesterday. Just keeping fingers crossed it won't take so long to get the floor stained as we can get on with the decorating then :) The bathroom is still waiting with some jobs part done

I have been following the Simplifying Life thread and when I go shopping today it will be cash only, no cards. I will withdraw £130 but the budget is £125 for shopping. I really want to reduce this but as I can spend more than that each week this is a good start :)

Oh has gone back to work today and the company are informing their staff of redundancies this week so he is not in a happy place convinced they will get rid of him and keep the younger staff members. I don't even know how we will cope if he has to sign on and I feel for anyone in that situation.

I'm getting the ingredients for onion marmalade and piccalilli today so they are going to be this week's projects. I'm quite excited about doing these I have to say :D

Diana, you will very soon have a little more time to be thrifty, inbetween running back and forth to school. Just wait till you get to my age - early retirement and not a minute in the day to spare :rotfl:

Jlhmd, your poor hubby, what a thing to be faced with - my heart goes out to you both. Lets hope they have more sense and keep some one on who knows what they are doing.

Spent last night and this morning getting sorted for the 'new' suite to arrive. My brother loves the ideaa I got one for £15 - bet he wishes his wife was frugal, she doesnt know the meaning of the word.

Tea is cooked using the ys meatballs from yesterday so hopefully not much to do today - she says with fingers crossed behind her back  Apart from water the greenhouse, pick more tomatoes, clean kitchen, corral dirty washing, hang washed stuff, make a wreath for Ds's blessing, finish knitted pig..........

Having an OS day today - DH has taken the car so no way am I going shopping as I usually do on a Tuesday so another NSD.

All meals are from stores: Breakfast: scrambled eggs on toast; lunch: jacket potato with LO mince & veg; Dinner: Mixed bean goulash (frozen a week or so ago) and rice.

I'm trying to run one of my freezers down (I have 3!) as we go on holiday at the end of this week. I'm hoping that I can get everything out of my outside upright (4 drawer) into my small outdoor chest one; although have a bit of space in the fridge/freezer in kitchen. Was hoping to get outside to see how much I can move but unless the rain stops that's not going to happen today!

Best get on and do some housework 'cos the housework fairies don't seem to be doing it for me, LOL!

    Hello Ladies

May I join in? I am attempting to get back to my OS ways having been made redundant a few months back and struggling with (non serious/stress related)illness. I am hoping to simplify my life and work part time rather than the 60 hours a week I was doing in a job I hated. I also have a secured loan I am desperate to get paid off as soon as possible so need to save as much as I can. We can afford to pay it but it is a big payment hasn't got a long time to run but would make us a lot more secure if we could get rid of it.

My DS starts school next week ( - where has my baby gone!) so will be ramping up the OS and job hunting over the next few weeks.

    OS plans for today:

    1) Make lunch for visitors tomorrow with what I have in (only need a bag of salad)
    2) Stick to very small top up list when pop to shop for salad
    3) Use up the last of the gammon joint in carbonnarra for tea (this will be the 4th meal for 3 out of a £6 joint)
    4) Make cookies using the dough in the freezer and top with odds and ends in the cupboard for tomorrow's visitors
    5) Housework
    6) Wash bedding and dry this and towels on line
    7) Finish staining old bench so it lasts through the winter

I am full of cold so hoping I can get through my list today.

Will check out the simple living thread a couple of you have mentioned and subscribe to read at my leisure tonight.

  • Morning everyone,

Hugs to jlhmd666 - hope the news isn't bad. And my sympathies to Caterina - glad you've patched it up though. Dh said something to me at Easter and although he's apologised, it's still sort of out there....

Back at work today - and it won't be a NSD as ds2 needs new trainers for school. Have scored some food from work that was going to be thrown away - so 3 of us more thrifty souls claimed it and divvied it up. I have a tin of slightly soft biscuits -(tiffin cake) - milk, bread, bananas and tangerines. Will have to get some value choc from MrT but will try to resist anything else.

Weather is improving here - tbh it couldn't get worse - so I might get washing out later. Waiting for ds1 to return - he's interviewing for an intern position for his gap year which would give experience and some much needed money!
