I've been looking at making some of our evening meals 'meat free' maybe twice per week as meat is so expensive but I can't see OH going without as he loves meat and would rather have that than anything else and I will feel guilty if he has it but no-one else does. I think I will try with a vegetable quiche or cheese and bean / onion pasties this week and fingers crossed they won't notice the lack of meat :)

Does he like curry? Our new fav is cauliflower & chickpea curry. How about spicy falafels in pitta?

Some nice ideas nw :) Have you got a recipe for the cauliflower & chickpea curry please? Since my gallbladder started playing up I have reduced the amount of meat I eat as I often have soup or last night for example I had pak choi which was so nice and although I was going to have chicken breast with it in the end I just had the pak choi :)

I'm sure being meat free for a couple of nights will have health advantages so now it's just another way to get OH on board :D

Ah gallbladder pain, I remember it so well:eek:. Had mine removed about 3 yrs ago.

I use the Hairy Dieters curry recipe or if pushed for time, a small tin of Pataks vindaloo. I only ever pay 59p or below and we get at least 3 portions from it

    Good morning,

Reducing meat consumption is not a problem at ours at DH and I don't eat any (not vegetarians as we eat small amounts of fish) and DS rarely eats it. But why not wean your partners gently by cooking the way of Italian peasants of old? Using meat almost as a condiment rather than the centrepiece.

    Ideas:

Bolognese sauce for pasta with lots of finely chopped onion, carrot and celery and the mince cut down by cooked brown lentils

Chicken with peppers (L1dl have a very good offer on peppers at the moment), fry lots of onions and chopped peppers in oil, add a few strips of chicken meat, salt and pepper to taste and let it cook.

Polpettone (meat loaf) by using lots of stale bread reconstituted in milk (then squeeze the milk away) and breadcrumbs, 1 egg, chopped garlic and herbs, a bit of grated cheese, mix it all with some mince and roll into a loaf shape then bake.

Pasta Amatriciana sauce: fry lots of onions (see the recurrent theme?) in olive oil, add chopped unsmoked bacon - pancetta is nice from L1dl but you can even use fresh pork belly for this dish, tinned or chopped fresh tomatoes and a nice bit of chilli (omit if spicy is not your thing), simmer until cooked and dress pasta, adding grated pecorino cheese on top for extra flavour and protein.

Rissoles, using up minimal meat/bacon for flavour, in any variation of minced chopped veg and potato/breadcrumbs/cooked pulses/gram flour etc.

Not intending to teach granny to suck eggs, just a few ideas, HTH!

My OS day today, starting with asking DH to cook breakfast (to conserve energy LOL) goes like this:

Day off from kitchen works for DH so we spend the day together. Free cinema preview this morning, then back home for lunch, but no defined plans for the afternoon, might go for a walk in the Stratford Olympic park, then J Lewis cafe for free coffee and cake. Sadly I read that they will be discontinuing the free cake and drinks vouchers for all members, from next month it will depend on spent amount in store to get vouchers. Ah well, all nice things come to an end!

    Have a good OS day.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
