How long do openreach take to do upgrades on exchange?

I've had problems with my broadband for a few months now. It keeps dropping out and has got even slower than normal. I'm in a rural area so only ever got 1mb but now it's around 0.3 and cuts out many times each day.

I contacted the Talktalk CEO office and they have sent seemingly endless engineers from openreach. The engineers have told me that there are complaints from almost everyone in my area and the postcode next to it and from lots of providers including TalkTalk, Plusnet, Orange, Sky and BT's own customers. They also said my profile is changing more often than they've ever seen.

To cut a long story short, eventually TalkTalk told me that Openreach need to upgrade the equipment at the exchange and they cannot help me until this happens. I asked how long that would be and was told in a similar previous situation the customer waited a year.

Is there any way to 'encourage' openreach to sort this out sooner? I was thinking of writing to my M.P. as they are saying a lot about improving rural broadband recently. Or, is there any way of knowing how long this will actually take them?

Check your exchange here if TalkTalk are shown as LLU providers then the equipment at the exchange is theirs.

If not LLU then TalkTalk could be talking about provision of ADSL2+ instead of plain ADSL which won't help people with long lines anyway which I'm guessing is your problem. Alternately it may be the provision of FTTC they are referring to and that is happening as fast as BT can manage already.

Thanks, I've just checked using the link you provided and under 'LLU operator presence' it says TalkTalk and Sky are enabled. Is that what you mean?

It's hard for me to understand as TalkTalk really seem to have tried their best with this and seem as exasperated as I am. They have given me a substantial discount on my package and will let me out of my contract if that is what I would prefer (only 3 months into it), but I'd rather have some broadband than none at all. They also said I could try fibre but that their computers are warning that it will not give good speeds.

I've spoken to my neighbours and they are all having the same problem. Most are with different providers, though one is also on TalkTalk. It makes me think my speed would be just as bad if I changed provider but I'm unsure.

Forgot to add, my closest neighbour has FTTC and she is also only getting 0.3mb at best. Most of the time hers doesn't work at all. Mine is actually a little better.

Sounds to me as if you are a long way from both the exchange and the nearest cabinet. There is nothing that could be changed at the exchange as it sounds like it is FTTC enabled and the LLU providers at least will be ADSL2+ although with long lines that is no better than plain ADSL anyway. All that could be done sort it out would be a new cabinet nearer to you served by fibre. That's unlikely unless subsidised/

I'm 5 miles from the exchange and my cabinet is about a mile away. Although it is fibre enable, TalkTalk have said they are reluctant to install it as the equipment has faults and it wouldn't be worth my money until it's sorted out.

I've just read on Sam Knows, that they list the ofcom classification as market 1 and it says that 'This exchange has BT Wholesale as the sole provider of broadband services'. Does this mean anything?

Talktalk have said the problem may be due to so many people in my area getting broadband recently and the equipment is not able to cope.

Hi Penryn, it doesn't have my router listed. There is a similar one but it has far more lights on it than mine.

OK, whats your routers make and model?
Most router manufacturers use the same IP adresses for all their models though.

With 63 db line you are never going to get much more than a couple of Mbps but 700 kbps is a bit slow.. Try rebooting the router and redoing the stats.
