Keeping child off school because it's their birthday!

My son would have wanted to go to school, as you say, they get all the fuss there, the badges, the happy birthdays, the attention and then when they come home or if it is more convenient a saturday celebrating his birthday he gets two sets of birthday attention, bonus:D
The children at the school I work at enjoy celebrating their birthdays with their friends, the have helium balloons tied to their bags and their head of house gives the children in their house sweets! A birthday celebrating with your school friends doesn't seem to bad!0 -

When they could be at school writing happy Christmas in German on a homemade card, watching Blackadder, searching for a teachers new broadband contract (her request) or listening to your teacher gossip with their favourite (often the less academic!) students... These were all real experiences at my well Oftsed rated school. The school can be in the wrong.
I had one day off ill in 5 years and one week off from up until year 9 for holiday (couldn't be taken in summer). I feel like I wasted some of my time doing these ridiculous tasks when I could have been learning! I often learnt more about language, culture and history on holiday than at school!0 -
I've not read this but 25-30 years ago omg -when did that happen? sWe were all allowed to stay off primary school for our birthdays as there were 8 of us and you spent the whole day out with mum and went round the market and went to McDonald's when it had polystyrene boxes for my mums fillet o fish and a fab toy in mine and it was great. I remember also picking a mint green and baby pink track suit off the market and feeling so grown up! !!
Dd goes to school but I'm in work so no. She also has so many more choices than I had its different times.
It all stopped when you got to secondary school though - day out with mum off school.0 -
I'm sure some teacher will kick off and it'll be stopped. The reality is TAs often put in a lot of extra unpaid hours and a gesture like this hurts no one but I'm sure there will be a teacher who feels that despite the disparity in pay that because they can't have it the TA shouldn't either.bylromarha wrote: »Moved schools recently as a teacher. New head quietly lets some of the TAs have a day or 2 off to make a long weekend to celebrate their birthday/wedding anniversary. No pay docked.
Whilst it's a nice gesture as school staff don't get to opt when their holidays are, I'm not sure the governors would be too happy if they found out. Already rumblings round the staff about it.
I've never understood the "specialness" of birthdays - I can choose to have a "me" day any day I want to. My birthday was 4 days ago, and I did everything as normal. Will make sure I have some fantastic treats though on our up and coming holiday.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

When we get married the wedding anniversary will supercede it (thought will probably still acknowledge it). We are even planning something special for a little landmark this year, why not?
I got married on the anniversary of us getting togetherI used to be an axolotl0 -
To be honest I think it's just wierd. I have never heard of anyone I know keeping their child off school because it's their birthday.
We always went to school apart from my ine brother who happened to be born in August. It would never have occurred to us to even try and get to stay home on our birthday. You simply had your birthday tea that evening and if a party then it would be at the weekend.
I think by keeping your children off school you fuel the want it now line of thinking, when sometimes due to other things you just can't have it all now end of.0 -

This child may well feel that they are "special" and if they want a day off for their birthday or any other reason they can take it regardless of whether school/work/uni etc agree. If they are not granted their wish they may well lie to get it as they are not being taught that lying is wrong by their parent.
I never got time off of school for birthdays or holidays either but then I would not have expected to.
I can grasp that if you become a teacher you know you have to take holidays in school holidays - doesn't mean you have to like it though does it? Parents know when they have children and send them to school that really they shouldn't be taking the children out of school just to get a cheaper holiday - doesn't stop them though does it?
If parents don't like paying more for holidays why should teachers?
Jeez let it go already woman!0 -
It isn't something I would do, as far as mine are concerned they can have a day off when they are I'll, or for college/uni interviews but apart from that they are going to school. Not a birthday, but one of my pupils recently missed one of his GCSE science exams to go and see a band, he asked me what days I would be in during the holidays to help him revise, I'm sorry but he chose to miss that exam so he will have to walk that path alone.0
