I want to get stronger, what weight of dumbbell should I use?

    You got your answer in post two, there is no one size fits all answer

    If you want to find out the weight you should be lifting, join a gym if you havent already and get a gym programme made up

    My brother can bench press 100kgs and deadlift 200kgs, hes five foot ten and 12 stones, but not everyone of that height and weight could do what he does, some could do more, some could do less

    Its like asking how long is a piece of string.

    If you add the results of all men, and divide by the number of men, you will get a figure somewhere, I'm guessing 10kg - 20kg

    Yes, in an overly-simplistic way of thinking you could say this, but what do you count as "men"? Over the age of 21, 20, 18, 16? What about transgender people? Do you take the weight they curl today for 8 reps or their personal best one rep max? How do you compare an 8 stone boy to Arnie? And where exactly do you think the details of everybody's weight lifting statistics are kept? From a practical perspective, there is no answer to your question.



    Edit: so even if you could in theory determine an average, the answer would be completely meaningless. It would have no relevance to what you should do.

    Use a weight that is heavy for you and aim to go heavier with practice. Or go with 11.34kg as has been suggested.

    Where are you going to find the results of all men?

    All men in the world? Good luck with that.

    If I asked a question like that and thought I could work out the answer from the way you described above Id expect people to ask me if I had been taking pills to lower my IQ.

    Its not rocket science. Anyone with half a brain would know that you have a gym programme regularly reviewed and you'd expect to see progression as time went on.

    If you've to ask then you really shouldn't lift..

    It then depends upon physique.
    What kind of routine you have.
    Where in the routine you are doing that exercise.
    Are you balancing out exercises - bicep, triceps, chest and back. whether that is in one workout or different days?

    sometimes its worth doing sets in 'pyramids' where reduce reps & increase the weight. 3 sets doing 12,10 & 8 reps. start with a warmup weight and step up weight each set. You can then try to push for say 6 or 4 reps at a weight that is pushing you a bit more (but not to injure yourself).

    But do always maintain good form when exercising.

    failing that try speaking to a trainer at the gym so then assess and come up with a program for you. where you can then review and push yourself more..
