Hi quoia and anyone else who reads this.
As promised, here is an update on my friends issue. I tried to PM you, quoia, but was advised that your inbox is full and you need to free up some space to receive further messages.
My apologies to all if this is clogging up the thread, but it is an issue connected to Daily Mail rewards so I hope you will forgive me. Now for the update.
Things have improved in that I was able to log him in to the site through Firefox. The odd thing about this is that he couldn't do so two days ago after I downloaded Firefox as a new browser for him. However, as he can now get in he is happy enough.
He still cannot get in through Chrome or IE.
I cleared the browsing history, cookies and cache in Chrome but that made no difference. I removed Chrome and downloaded it again (version 40.0.2214.94m) but we hit the same problem.
I hope this is accessible to you, here is an image of the page before he tries to log in. If you can see it you will notice the yellow triangle over the padlock and the error message which reads {{errorModel.password}}
Of course, I checked the date and time which was correct. A reboot was carried out and I suspended the anti-virus; neither of these had any effect.
Someone has suggested that the issue might be the Windows SSL cache and that Chrome and IE share many settings under the covers but Firefox shares none of these. He says that is out of his comfort zone, though. I have no clue about this.
Thanks again for your help and advice, quoia. I would still like to fix his problem once and for all and if you or anyone else has any further ideas they would be most welcome.
Edited to add; looks like that Tinypic image has not been displayed. Maybe this will?

Thanks Aristotle
Sorry about my "inbox full"
Hmmm.
Looked at the image and obviously the page isn't loading properly ...
... but don't know why !
For instance there are several non-displayed images
showing a
instead of
and I think the {{errorModel.password}} bit
is associated with the lack of the "SHOW PASSWORD" option that should be to the right of the "STAY SIGNED IN" choice.
I'm presuming that this really is something to do with the GREY PADLOCK YELLOW TRIANGLE issue and why it's not just a GREEN PADLOCK.
Question is does HAVING the "wrong" Padlock CAUSE the page not to load as it should do, OR is it an error within the page that results in NOT having the "correct" Green one displayed.
I think the "PLEASE SIGN IN AGAIN" bit is displayed because the webpage has not been truly established via a full or secure httpS connection.
ODD!
