Hi....... I have 1 spare code for today available
PM
(Code gone to Nudge)joe2cool0 -
Like this ?
Regards any further advice I can only offer ...
I presume his device (Laptop ?) has been powered off and on again, and rebooted from scratch.
Is it possible that there is a KEYBOARD FAULT ? (and that one of the keys used in the password has stopped working?)
Easy to check this by opening NOTEPAD and verifying that every key produces the character it is supposed to.
Or what about another piece of software doing something?
Like an antivirus program or similar interfering .....
... did he download something new, or upgrade anything in the last few days and this logging in problem started immediately afterwards ?
Just a thought
Quoia, thank you so much for your very useful post. It gives us a few things we can try.
We did a reboot and we will try and do another. The Keyboard fault is also something we will investigate.
I will endeavour to find out what he may have downloaded recently. He did say he kept getting messages that something needs updating or there are threats to his laptop, but he is in his mid-80s and may get confused. Plus he is even less technically minded than I am.Although there is one other thing that didn't make sense (to me at least) in your statement ...
I downloaded other browsers on his machine (he uses Chrome so we tried IE and Firefox) but the same outcome occurred when we tried to sign him in to the site; he received the identical message about error password (without even trying to sign in) and the security issue seemed present.
When you tried to sign in - got the same error password - without even trying to sign in
erm ... what ?
When he navigates to this page here of the mail website
https://www.mymail.co.uk/login
below the password box is some error password message in red. Also, where it says "If you already have a Mymail account etc" he doesn't have these words but "please try and enter your details again". That appears, along with the error message, as soon as he navigates to the page without having tried to enter his details.Oh and by the way ... IS THIS THE ERROR ?
The email and password combination entered doesn't appear to be valid. Did you have any upper case letters or numbers in your password?
This is what I get if I enter either the correct email address but the wrong password, OR, the wrong email address but correct password.
No, that is not the message.and just for completeness (I don't know what you see on your laptop/mobile phone) but in my address bar (latest up to date Chrome - Version 40.0.2214.93 m )
I get a CLOSED GREEN PADLOCK
I get the closed green padlock on my laptop and mobile as well, but he gets the yellow triangle you displayed earlier in your post. When he clicks on this, he gets the message you reproduced about not having audit records and outdated security settings. Needless to say I get none of those and can log in as him without problems.
I will call round and see him tomorrow and we'll try all you suggest.
Once again, thank you very much for your advice. Much appreciated.0 -
I would appreciate a spare sunday code if anyone has a spare please.
thanks so very much0 -

Thanks for your reply, not a problem, just hope I can help.
Given this further information it doesn't sound like the keyboard.
Hmmm ... ODD that it's NOT the error message I've posted
... and that the page is not as I'd expect to see it
I'd be interested to know EXACTLY what both messages are.
It's quite a "robust" login page
IF you do not have a @ in the email address it tells you.
IF you DO but it's not in the format a@b.com (or similar) it does say
"Please enter a valid email address"
IF Password is left blank > "You must fill in a password"
I've never seen anything else where it says ...
"If you already have a MyMail account or have previously registered with Mail Rewards Club, Mail Plus or You Beauty Discovery, simply use those details to sign in below"
I wonder if he has got a virus ?
Presume he has antivirus software ?
Probably worth checking it's fully up to date and that it scans clean.
Does he by any chance have a Password Manager ?
One of those things where you save and store all your website logins, userids, email addresses and associated passwords etc, so you only have to remember just the one login combination for the PW Manager but every other website's can be totally unique in every respect possible, you no longer need to keep track of them and it's "automatic".
If so that could be trying to provide the details for mymail ahead of entering them manually, explaining the error before you even try to signin.
Other than that the only other thing that springs to mind would be CLEARING COOKIES !
It's here for Chrome > chrome://settings/cookies
Either all of them or select those for mymail and related sites.
Although having said that, when you tried other (not Chrome) browsers from scratch I'm sure they would NOT have used the same ones ........ ????
ODD !
Something that has just crossed my mind regards "out of date" Security Certificates and a couple of times I think I've encountered a similar issue for a site that is "DEFINITELY OK" ....
CHECK BOTH TIME & DATE ON THE PC
I'm sure it can throw up some sort of security error if your laptop is hours or even minutes out of step with the real world where you are.

Thanks you very much for another informative and useful post, quoia.
I'd be interested to know EXACTLY what both messages are.
I will find that out for you on Friday when I visit him next (his health is failing and he has health visitors coming tomorrow so I won't see him until the following day). It's quite a "robust" login page

IF you DO but it's not in the format a@b.com (or similar) it does say

IF Password is left blank > "You must fill in a password"
All I can say for the moment is that it wasn't any of those and I tried to enter his email address and password for him, in the identical format I entered them on my phone and laptop where they worked, but the message came up. Sorry, I know I am not being helpful but I can't recall anything more specific about the error message.I wonder if he has got a virus ?
Presume he has antivirus software ?
Probably worth checking it's fully up to date and that it scans clean.
That is always possible. He uses Avast Free version and I ran a quick scan earlier but it didn't throw up anything that I could see.Does he by any chance have a Password Manager ?

No indeed, I doubt it is a cookie issue as I cleared them all for him after I explained that any logins, numbers and passwords that come up as filled in when he goes to any sites will not do so once I cleared the cookies.CHECK BOTH TIME & DATE ON THE PC
I'm sure it can throw up some sort of security error if your laptop is hours or even minutes out of step with the real world where you are.
Yes; someone suggested this earlier and it is quite possible that his time and date may be incorrect. That will be the first thing I will check on Friday.
Thank you once again, quoia. I shall report back to you, via PM if that is okay so as not to clog up the thread, after I have been round there on Friday.0 -
