A friend of mine has suddenly found himself unable to login to his mymail rewards account having been doing so successfully for years. He has contacted the Daily Mail who have been of no help, saying the site is fine.
I have been able to log into his account for him on my laptop, and also using my mobile phone, so I have been able to input his reward code numbers for him.
His problem occurred at the weekend when he got a message on the sign in page, in red, saying "error password" or something very similar and a request to login again. Every time he tried to log in, he fails and gets the same message. Of course the password and login are correct as otherwise I would not have been able to use them on his behalf.
On his machine, the site displays a yellow triangle over the padlock in his address bar. I have clicked on this and it says something about the site using an outdated security certificate. I don't understand that for, as I say, I can access the site using my browsers.
I downloaded other browsers on his machine (he uses Chrome so we tried IE and Firefox) but the same outcome occurred when we tried to sign him in to the site; he received the identical message about error password (without even trying to sign in) and the security issue seemed present.
Can anyone advise as to how we might solve his problem? Has anyone experienced a similar difficulty and, if so, how was it rectified? I know very little about IT and cannot suggest anything.
Thank you in anticipation.

Just wondering whether your friend is using 'Comparative View', from the Tools menu.
It can make a difference when using IE.
Good luck0 -

Like this ?
I'm not absolutely sure but I think this is a red herring regards the password problem
I believe that this icon in Chrome does indicate "issues" with Security Certificates but not necessarily ones that have actually expired, but moreover those that will be due to expire in the next 12 to 24 months (well sometime in 2016 & 2017 anyway)
It's to do with the HTTPS cryptography and what they call the "old" SHA-1 (or equivalent) hashing algorithm that's used for the security.
(exactly how it's handled depends upon which version of Chrome you are using)
This is somewhat outdated now and sites are moving to SHA-2 (specifically SHA256), or an equivalent and SHA-1 is being deprecated by Microsoft (Internet Explorer) and other interested parties - Mozilla (Firefox), Google (Chrome) etc ...
However NONE of this should have anything to do with logging in to a website OR getting an error like this IF the email address and password are indeed correct.
Regards any further advice I can only offer ...
I presume his device (Laptop ?) has been powered off and on again, and rebooted from scratch.
Is it possible that there is a KEYBOARD FAULT ? (and that one of the keys used in the password has stopped working?)
Easy to check this by opening NOTEPAD and verifying that every key produces the character it is supposed to.
Or what about another piece of software doing something?
Like an antivirus program or similar interfering .....
... did he download something new, or upgrade anything in the last few days and this logging in problem started immediately afterwards ?
Just a thought
Although there is one other thing that didn't make sense (to me at least) in your statement ...
I downloaded other browsers on his machine (he uses Chrome so we tried IE and Firefox) but the same outcome occurred when we tried to sign him in to the site; he received the identical message about error password (without even trying to sign in) and the security issue seemed present.
When you tried to sign in - got the same error password - without even trying to sign in
erm ... what ?
Oh and by the way ... IS THIS THE ERROR ?
The email and password combination entered doesn't appear to be valid. Did you have any upper case letters or numbers in your password?
This is what I get if I enter either the correct email address but the wrong password, OR, the wrong email address but correct password.
and just for completeness (I don't know what you see on your laptop/mobile phone) but in my address bar (latest up to date Chrome - Version 40.0.2214.93 m )
I get a CLOSED GREEN PADLOCK
