  • Well It's been fun elite ! must pop off now ! got a few FORUMS to hit tonight.

TO INFORM THE PUBLIC THE TRUTH ON DIY GASWORK !
  • The Health & Safety Executive's interpretaion of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 appears to be that a landlord must "have all installation, maintenance and safety checks carried out by a CORGI registered gas installer".

    http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg285.pdf

If this is correct you may be able to do DIY work on your own home if you are not CORGI registered (as long as you are 'competent' within the meaning of the regulations) but not on a property you let to tenants. What happens if you do installation work while the property is empty and then let it out isn't clear but it would seem that subsequent maintanance and safety checks must be done by a CORGI registered person.

The letter referred to in http://www.extra.rdg.ac.uk/wkc1/DIY/gas/msg00038.html was written in 1996 will not have taken into account the 1998 regulations.

There is nothing wrong with the boiler or radiators except that it is illegal to install the boiler in 99.9% of properties in England.

Not true. The percentage is quite a bit lower than 99.9%!

There is a "exemption formula" for working out if you can fit a non condensing system:
    http://www.idhee.org.uk/ExceptionsGuide.pdf

If you get the required number of points you can legally fit a non condenser! They are cheaper to buy and service and are more reliable.

The flip side is that a condenser is cheaper to run.

I have to agree with EliteHeat on this one. You are not allowed to undertake work on Gas installations unless you have been deemed competent and have a Corgi registration.

Once again, not true for a DIY scenario.

You have to be "competent" in the eyes of the law but do NOT have to be Corgi registered so long as you receive no payment or reward for the work done/you work in your own home.

Eliteheat, I find it peculiar that a "corgi registered" plumber comes on here, telling us that it's "illegal" to do DIY gas work, when it is entirely legal!

Perhaps you aren't aware of the law as it currently stands? As you are a Corgi member I find this worrying to say the least!

"If you were qualified and authorised to install gas appliances you would know this" comes to mind..

The more cynical among us could believe it's an attempt to scare the public and drum up more business.
