Virgin Mobile 4G

I had been with Virgin mobile for years, but have recently become disillusioned with what felt to me like a very slow data service (especially compared to friends and family who could browse the internet no problem).
As with anything Virgin (except for price hikes) the wait for 4G was taking an age, so i cancelled my £12.50 a month deal (100 mins, unlimited internet, unlimited texts), and signed up to a Three sim paying £15 for 200 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited data (including free 0800 numbers and am able to use phone in USA, Spain and a number of other countries at no extra cost).
So far i have been very impressed. Ookla speed test app at home with Virgin was giving me approx 5MB (mixed 3G/HSPDA signal). With Three i get 4G and tested this morning at 40MB!!!
At work Virgin data signal was between non-existent and 1.5MB. Today i got 12MB with the Three sim.
Just my two pence, but am glad i made the move.0 -
It appears 4G is here at last
But at extra cost
Starts at £6 300Mb (sim only)
up to £25 for 20Gb

One thing about Virgin Media's 4G offering is the fact any unused data is carried over into the next month.
From what I've seen 4G speeds will be around 25MB/s down and VOIP/Tethering is still "banned".It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Think Virgin missed a trick here
Whilst FB messaging and whatsapp may not count towards the data allowance
Video calling or voice calling though those apps does count towards the data allowance...
Shame0 -
After waiting so long for 4g, I rang them this morning and they have no decent loyalty deals for long-standing customers. The best sim only deal I was offered was 2gb data for £10 sim only.
I got my PAC and I'm off to 3, 4gb and unlimited calls & texts for £9 per month on a 12 month contract, and £25 cashback via TCB.0 -
Until midnight of 28 Nov you can get 4G double data on the lower 3 data packages.
SIM only
This results in:
300Mb>600Mb 300mins £6
1Gb>2Gb 1500mins £9
2Gb > 4Gb 2500mins £12
So slightly better value than plusnet I reckon.0 -
virgin still doing double data until end of January0

Noticed that as well.
But sim only deals seem to be only on a 30 day rolling contract.
Does that mean that mean that you effectively you start a new contract every 30 days and hence could lose the double data or does it run in perpetuity which could make it a lot better than their 24 mth contract.0 -
30 day contracts have a huge advantage in that they run until cancelled and that you can "ditch and switch" with only 30 days notice.
The flip side is the network can change the terms and conditions with 30 days (often longer in practice) notice.
12 month SIM contracts usually revert to 30 day rolling ones at the end of 12 months.
Virgin have an on-line chat facility, ask them.0 -
I guess I will find out for sure on 1st of Jan.
I reckon the roll over is limited to ~half your allowance.0
