Look for one of the unlockers on eBay, they can normally arrange an Apple unlock, I saw this one at £11.99 recently.
I know someone who used this unlocker successfully.

No. Most iPhones sold new on contract are initially unlocked and will lock to the network of the first sim inserted into it which is probably where you have heard this from however once an iPhone has been unlocked, the unlock is permanent0 -

No, that's something that CarPhoneWarehouse foisted on it's customers when it started selling "sim free" iPhones.
An unlocked iPhone (by or from Apple) will always be unlocked.====0 -
Don't buy a 3GS, it doesn't have the latest iOS and therefore what you learn about iPhone will be out of date.
Go for a 4S. Don't get it unlocked by a shop or eBay, it will lock again if you try to update the software. Contact the network and see if they can unlock it for you0 -
Don't buy a 3GS

The phone's locked to o2, although no sim card in it yet, I'm on Virgin PAYG.
I'm not bothered about transferring to o2 PAYG, but I want to keep my existing mobile number, how do I go about transferring my Virgin mobile to the iphone & o2?I'm hopeless with technology, in addition, I suffer with MH issues, what may appear simple, I struggle with, may I ask, please be patient, thank you0 -

Phone 789 and ask Virgin for your PAC.
Rather move to Gigffgaff on O2, O2 direct is very poor value.====0 -
