smokeless no.5

I'm not a big one for putting stuff on here from the "nationals" but does anyone know anything about smokeless coal no.5 from cpl?

They've sent me a leaflet through that has it at £8.25 for 25kg, which is cheap for smokeless in my area.

I'm tempted to take a punt on it for a few bags as i can always mix it off with some homefire if it isn't that great but i wondered if anyone else had tried it at all.

  • I've had an email from CPL about smokeless no. 5 and the price is brilliant. I called them to ask about it as I usually use Homefire ovals. They said it was new on the market yesterday and that it is an economy fuel. So, I suppose it's which is the most important, price or performance.

This description 'economy fuels' is really very unhelpful, isn't it? I've tried quite a few of the smokeless offerings and found that an 'economy fuel' (Newflame) burns as well in my stove as anything else.

I'd be interested in trying this CPL newcomer - but I doubt I'd order a ton of it!

At the price point I've decided I'm going to give a few bags a go.

In my worst case scenario i figure i can mix it off with the homefire / stoveheat i would use when i need a longer "burn".

I suppose i won't be reporting back on this for a few months but if anyone does use some in the interim I'd be interested in how they get on.

Edit:- As with you badger, i'm not going to go mad and order a job lot of it.

Yep me too received a leaflet yesterday, wanted to know if anybody had heard/tried it before now?

I will order a few bags, and give it a whirl - I like experimenting with various solid fuels.

I'll leave feedback, once received to describe shape etc, and then later in the season on performance.

Will be interested to know what others will think of it.

Best to visit your local CPL centre and see what they have. My nearest one has a lot more fuels at different prices than what comes up on Coals2u website even with a search with my postcode.

They have a 25kg smokeless solid fuel pack for room heaters for £8 that is not listed on the website, and it burns better than Stoveheat and Taybrite.

Do they say what the kWh per kg is?

    No it doesn't really say.

To be honest some of the "claims" on some of the stuff I've tried don't seem to pan out in my stove.

Certainly i find Stoveheat better than just about anything else I've previously used.

I've now got a few bags of the No5 just for testing over this winter.

It looks very similar to Stoveheat, it's certainly a lot smaller than e-coal or homefire.

I guess we'll see in a few months time.

Just need to get the chimney swept and the cowl replaced (that the last sweep pretty much demolished).

    Maybe the high 6s for kWh/KG? http://www.nottenergy.com/energy_cost_comparison/energy_comparison_data/may_2014

Agree that claims are often optimistic, and they don't tell the whole story (stove efficiency etc). But on the other hand at least they provide some sort of objective measure.

I am such an idiot. After doing a quick check of my stash today, I realised I hadn't ordered any test bags of Smokeless No.5 (I call it Chanel No.5).

If anybody is using it already, give me the low down. I still have quite a bit to keep me going , but may order a top up, including Chanel in late October early November. Cheers

Had the fire on for the first time yesterday evening but i only used some wood as it was more a "quick run through".

I'll try get some of the No5 on over the next few days and see how it behaves (assuming it gets cold enough).
