Too many variables. Engine size? mileage per month? Around town or motorway? etc etc etc.

ok fair enough to clarify a few bits its a 1.6 and it will be just local around town, work and back (only 2 miles away) except for weekly hospital visits. I don't know mileage as ive never drove before.

If you achieve around 30MPG then the fuel should cost your around £0.20 per mile on average.

With these short journeys I really hope that we are looking at petrol costs and not diesel costs.

But even a petrol wont be so efficient as it wont get up to full working temp.

No major problem though - but the mpg may be less than expected.

I do around 20,000 miles a year and have fuel bills around £2500 so on average my monthly fuel bill is just over £200

I hope that helps you - but there are so many variables it'll take you a couple of weeks to suss out your own figures.

Enjoy your new car and welcome to the world of car-ownership. ;)

Short journeys or not, how else am I meant to get to work. Work is 4 miles away but public transport is not always an option due to start times.

Got to think of the state of my mental health if I got bus to work and back everyday. Constantly standing at bus stops waiting on late buses and then the bus taking half and hour plus to do a 4 mile journey around the houses. It would make me mentally ill.

MSE is about saving money not cutting things out completely. I save on motoring costs by driving a 13 year old car with zero depreciation.

I do still do the odd long journey, did a 45 mile round trip yesterday.

Lee - you sound angry about my post - which was not even addressed to you.

I was in no way criticizing anyone who uses their car for short journeys.

I just wanted to point out to a person new to driving that the mpg could be a good bit less than expected - that's all.

And that my high costs aren't really going to help the OP with their individual calculations.

Each of us uses their car in their own way for their own benefit.

No attack on you - I'm glad to hear that your car saves you a lot of hassle.

car is a 2.2 diesel civic (which i would love to get rid of for something smaller and more suited for commuting in and out of Birmingham city centre...)
