What postural fashion are you referring to?I just think it's such a mean trick to foist this dog on people, let them get attached to him, and only then do they discover that they have bought extremely damaged goods. In this case, it's going to cost them A$5,000 to sort of put right the damage. This is $5,000 they don't have, so they have gone begging on the internet and raised $3,000 so far.
lir (or other dog-knowledgeable NP): What sort of suffering is this procedure going to put the dog through? How promising are the results likely to be? Quite apart from the money, is it worth it from the PoV of the dog's experience?Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

cannot remember what they call it. ATM. Think of German shepherds. Do you think of a wolf shaped dog or a triangular shaped dog? You can probably google image. n

A young dog, worth it I would imagine.
But its simply put of my remit.
Frankly its a risk with any pet. Or child or working animal.
With pets / animals you at least have the opportunity to research the breed health problems and individual breeders. We'd been mulling over kiwis for years, and years and years. I'm lucky I got him, the breeder died shortly afterwards, few breed the show / worker type I really wanted. ( kiwi's coat type is unfashionable in show circles GDb, I am a trend setter and rebel, but I believe the fight is stronger within and I do believe in good breeding.....)
No GDb, a mongrel far from giRantees it.a mongrel means you can be less at rock for. Any, or at risk from ALL of the ' breed' associated diseases that have gone I to the dog. Fwiw, I think ours are pretty healthy. I pick up more than lots of owners might, and ignore lots other owners might worry over. Lots of people wouldn't be worried about bog dog I think. Clients horses ( not with me) used to have. All sorts of problems I only knew about from text books, study, seeing practice or later work. ( still happens now)
E.g. You asked me about kiwi when I explained about about kiwis breed concerns. I KNOW his parents tested clear from them, so he is less likely to suffer then dogs not tested for them in their parents. We're he to stand IT IS REQUISITE he is tested so I could not say ' oh , I didn't know' if he were a carrier of something it might be considered not reprehensible to breed him with a Non carrier in some circumstances.
Dog dog is considered outstanding. When she broke her first leg in a co on greyhound injury ( like a common car accident rather than something genetic usually) is was bad luck. When she broke the other one I decided not to fulfill my undertaking to breed from her. I considered the risk she was overengineered too great. She sits right on the cusp of perfection.......sometimes.......that's too good to be true.. Its a breed that's hard
Y changed over millennia, and is not a small breed or genetically too compromised. What they Do suffer is arthritis. With her athletism I can see why. She used to leap off the top of the hay stack in the barn. And she hair pin bends.
As an owner I could say, ' to reduce your risk of arthritis you will never run' but I feel that would be cruel in the extreme. I'd rather put her to sleep a couple of years earlier and let her play like a nutter now.0 -
I couldn't imagine what you meant by a triangular dog until I googled for images as you suggested. They look weird to me. Give me a wolf shaped dog any day.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? For NPs with their own cats, or who see feral cats around their homes:

Yes, I find it hideous tbh. And although I love pugs as people I could not personally buy one, because I personally feel, without allowed permitted outcross to put health back in the breed and so e length back into the face, its.....not for me.
So many of the physical traits are not to my personal taste and I am vociferous about . (Not just in dogs....) but I feel that the principal of the WHOLE is still a good one and is better for welfare than not having one. But then, sight hounds, while not too wolf shaped, aren't that compromised, and have been around millennia, with good health......yes, there have been changes and yes, I'm not in favour of all of them.
The hard truth of it is, the nearer to wolf they are in shape the less adaptation has happened. The less they've changed over more recent history, the less close or rapid the in or line breeding has been.
That doesn't necessary correlate with longevity( the wolf thing)
Longevity one hopes increases in domestication, if we are doing it correctly.
Health can be increased simply by adequate nutrition/ husbandry.
Theoretically a 'wolf' with ideal circumstances provided to domestic genetic identical should live a longer, healthier life.
But we bred dogs to do jobs, That's why gdb's point about showing should be about good with children / obedience etc does not stack up to me.
Some dogs simply are not bred to be obedient, family dogs. That is not the dogs fault not the good breeders' fault. They should not be promoted and sold as family pets, but that's something very different.
There are plenty of dogs who are simply great, and who might make good pets in some homes, but who as a general rule are not going to make the top twenty breeds for families.
E,g, I love looking at the malamutes and similar we are seeing more of about now, But I think its a welfare nightmare. These dogs are dogs which thrive on HOURS of hard work a day and while charming enthusiastic dogs were never bred to be pet dogs on leads getting a walk down the shops twice a day.
Some mongrels do go on forever and are indestructible. I knew a sort of jack Russell who was run over by a refuse truck, got up shook, according to his owners, and his only a knowledgement of the event next day was he didn't chase the truck. Next day the little wretch did. Then our old big dog( not big dog, but her great several times over uncle) one of the oldest on record.
Average Life expectancy short in giant dogs for domestic dogs, yes, but about the same as a FREE LIVING wolf. So......not so bad in that context. Domestic wolves. can be very much greater.....0 -
When we get a dog we will be getting a rescue dog and looking for:
Good with children and other dogs
Temperamentally suited to be a household pet
Likes to play fetch - so that if I'm too tired to go for a proper walk (or just can't be bothered) I can stand/sit still in the park and throw a ball until the dog has had lots of running time
Short-medium fur - doesn't need more grooming than I've got time for
And my only 2 looks-based criteria:
"Sensible" ears - I don't like long ears that trail in the food bowl and on the ground
Straight or straightish tail - I have a thing about very curly tails (ie up over the dog's back all the time) and don't like them.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? My parents' border collies are great - they are fun, not delicate at all, great at fetching, look sensible - but I certainly wouldn't choose them with young children (like Kermie) around. Isaac-aged kids would be fine, but I don't think collies are great with babies and toddlers. I'm very careful with Kermie and the collies when we visit.
Collies are only sensible for people who walk a lot, or have land for the collies to run on, I think. They need serious exercise, and would get miserable wihtout it....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Agree on all counts.0 -
For GBD, re spiders:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
