As much as I really, really, really don't want to move the bird, I'd like to move it even less if it isn't intact.

I wouldn't pick it up with my hand, as I'm also squeamish. Plus you don't know what's inhabiting it. But, I would pick it up with a spade or hoe. I think hoes are longer, but the shovel end is a bit small.

With any luck, some carrion eater will take the whole thing away during the night.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

There is zero chance of me touching it without at least one layer of plastic between me and the bird.

Like the idea of using a hoe.

    The plan is as follows:

Leave birdie where it is. Hoping that...
    1. Birdie recovers and flies away
    2. Birdie sadly does not recover, and is discovered by some carrion eater and is removed in one piece. I am none the wiser and can tell myself it has flown away.

    Back up plan...
    3. Birdie sadly does not recover, and is carefully manoeuvered - intact - into a plastic bag, then into the bin

Hopefully birdie isn't discovered by some carrion eater that doesn't fancy a whole bird.

    Good plan.

Definitely use a bag. I'm not mentioning the word that begins with m, that at the wreck we pretend doesn't because if you start if with a w is totally less offensive. The w word is Waggots.

Leave it there overnight first. Sometimes birds that appear to be dead aren't actually, and pick themselves up and fly away. If it still appears dead tomorrow, then it really is dead.

A friend and myself once spent around half an hour discussing how to put a bird 'out of it's misery'. Spent so long arguing who was doing what (thank god) to see said bird wake up and fly off.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

No, lets definitely not mention them.

I didn't want to move the thing because it might jump back to life and peck my eyes out. I'd not contemplated any other (more likely) mobile nasties. I was going for the bag option because of all the bugs that might have killed the birdie.

Anyhow. I'm sure it's going to fly away overnight. If not it will definitely be in one piece tomorrow and I will calmly dispose of it with minimum fuss and maximum dignity.

Sod the waggots! How far can fleas and lice jump?

Its mites really with bird, and if you hold a plastic bag over them and swoop to cover your pretty safe. My guess is the end of the hoe is riskier tbh. Less contained.

I'd hoe the bird into a hedge and put some water down .... if it recovers it's got a drink .... it's got some cover/shelter. It's also not sitting mocking me from the middle of the lawn first thing in the morning.

It's fine. Birdie is going to fly away overnight.

I don't want to touch it until I have to. If it's still there first thing, I'll deal with it then. I've got the afternoon off and am having some pampering so I'm not going to spend all afternoon thinking about how I'm going to deal with it/ wondering if it will still be in one piece etc.

As I've said though, it's going to recover and fly off on it's merry way overnight.

That's supposed to be a picture of the mutt, looking glum with her lampshade on. I can't see it on my ipad. Did it come out?
