So our wonderful new viewbox arrives, with all its new facilities, basically sod all new but its free so what the heck

Of course it's not "free". They HAVE to tie you into a contract that's sufficiently long to pay for it AND their profit margin. No business can afford to provide anything free; the shareholders would go crazy.

If you were truly interested in money saving, you'd settle for a cheap Freeview receiver and NO subscription.

For me, the YouView box was cheaper than a Freeview recorder from Argos.

I did not have to sign up for any BT Vision package. That wasn't a requirement of the deal that I was offered. So I am still on the pay-per-view option - if I don't watch any BT content then I don't pay anything.

I was going to get a broadband and phone package from somebody for the next 18 months, and I was already locked into BT for 10 months in return for a discount I had negotiated with them.

So by agreeing to an 18 month contract, I will be paying the full price for my BT services for the last 8 months, with no prospect of any discount in those months. The extra amount I will end up paying because of the loss of the discount is less than the price of a cheap Freeview recorder, and considerably less than the price of a Freeview HD one.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Hold on, they are ONLY supplying an internet-powered recording box just as before, it isnt any hi-tech gizmo, we had no TV off them, its freeview, we stopped paying BT for FREEview ages ago
I pay Virgin Media for TV, but what I get isn't just Freeview.
You should compare all the channels before shouting off like that. Plus, I am pretty certain their YouView box will do a bit more than what most people's equipment will do, although TV's are catching up.

    I fell for the hype

Don't expect people to side with you here.

If you were happy, you were happy, if not, decline their service.
    18 months isn't that long.
