But I have been
Will I never learn?
Bt sent out messages and warnings about how they will be switching off our VT Vision service and how we needed a new "Youview" box but they are available FREE! yayyyyyyyyyy
Our current service will be switched off soon.....OK!
So our wonderful new viewbox arrives, with all its new facilities, basically sod all new but its free so what the heck
EXCEPT of course, to get the new box to replace the old box requires agreeing to a new 18 month contract....
Stitched up like a kipper again
Senility creeps up on you like fog on river bank

So they give you a free box and tie you into a contract extension. What's wrong with that? Giving you equipment at no upfront charge and tying you into a contract is hardly unique to BT.0

You have a very old silver BT Vision box (1st generation). This service is now defunct and is being turned off/discontinued tomorrow. So they supply you with a £200 worth of state of the art kit for free subject to a new 18 month contract. Stop moaning. If you don't want it, then send it back. It ain't that hard.0

Oh, and you could have opted for a 12 month contract paying £35 for the new YouView box.0

Hold on, they are ONLY supplying an internet-powered recording box just as before, it isnt any hi-tech gizmo, we had no TV off them, its freeview, we stopped paying BT for FREEview ages ago0

Then why did you do it? If you dont want it then send it back. I see no complaint here.0 -

Wish we still had Virgin before they changed the encryption....;)
You do know that via a BT Vision box you had to pay for Catch Up TV? Which you didn't, being PAYG (pay as you go). But you don't have to do that with your new YouView box. Even though you don't pay BT for TV, just access any of the on demand players and away you go, YouViewer.

Actually, it isn't state of the art kit. It's the old model YouView box that they no longer supply to new customers who pay for a subscription to BT TV.
But it was pretty clear in the letters that they sent me that I had to agree a new 18 month contract to get the free box. It was in the main text of the letter, not just the small print.
I worked out that an 18 month contract - and the loss of an opportunity to haggle for a better deal for that time - was still better than the cost of a cheap Freeview recorder. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
