But I never say to ignore the local independent, I just reply to those who post constantly that the local independent is going to be a better deal ...........they have no proof.
Check both and take the best deal .

I understand what you're saying and agree totally, the point was that other than local independants, the logistics of not being part of a group chain usually makes it uneconomical for you or them;);)

Plus there is the aspect, and I don't think it can be called snobbish, that it is best to support your local independent trader, otherwise Tesco will soon rule the world,(if they don't already)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

So much anti store advice. Why ??
Yes no one is ever fooled by their ridiculous 'sales' but to simply keep saying you will always get better service from some else is just wrong.
A salesman ( or woman ) who switches sides, doesn't overnight change his technique.
that it is best to support your local independent trader,

ONLY , if he provides a better service/ price...... I am not a charity.

to sum up , always shop around, check out ALL establishments and get the best deal

Had a terrible experience with Carpetright Feltham a few years ago: completely wrong advice on carpets, wrong and overpriced underlay specified, very poor fitting. Fitters couldn't be bothered to remove previous underlay, and wanted to put new underlay on top of the old one!! When I told them to remove the old underlay, they didn't have tools or even bin bags to take out the sections removed.

New carpet had to be fitted again by a second team. Bedroom white carpet has a nice defect in the middle...

Would avoid at all cost, as they are not even the cheapest.

One thing worth watching out for these days>>> I note that many retailers will not give you,or let you keep, a sample of the carpet you are ordering. When you get your carpet it is worth checking it is the quality you have ordered as many are made in several to suit price!!! After 35 years as a Carpet Fitter I have seen this on many occasions, one being a re-furb of a hotel where 22 rolls of 27" carpet were supplied via the Architect. I thought it odd when I noted all the manufacturers labels had been removed from the rolls.Several manufacturers will make your design in a choice of qualities.
Obviously this doesn't apply where you are buying from stock rolls in the store.

It wasn't me being anti store, plus I'm not exactly sure how you mean that.

And, I too won't give away my money, probably why we are both here;);)

But I do believe that all things being equal, ie the small man can equal the big guys price and service, that it is vitally important to keep the small shops in business, the Tesco syndrome affects almost every aspect of home product purchase.

And my summing up up being "always go local if you can for the same price", snobbish?, and I realise you didn't direct this at me, No, not in the least but I do decry some of the marketing tactics of the bully boys.

And yes I still do some shopping at Tescos:D and more to the point the last carpet we bought came from Carpetright, no issues with them at all.

Most posters are right on here that Carpetright sale is always on. Just don't think you're actually getting 50% off the true price of the carpet because you're not.
As has been said, Carpetright use their own names instead of the ones used by manufacturers. If getting a quote from them and a local independent, always check its the same carpet. Just because the colour may be the same, the weight or mix of the carpet could be different.
Also, Carpetright may be a big chain, but local independents often belong to buying groups. This means that they pool together to get better prices from manufacturers. They will nearly always be as good on price if not better than Carpetright.
Shop around and check the best deals. Remember Carpetright do not guarantee the fitting. You pay the fitter and any problems you have on that you have to go back through the fitter, not Carpetright.

    Can you substantiate that ?

I have worked in the carpet industry for over twenty years in retail and manufacturing. Carpetright are not alone in setting prices at a high level and then dropping them in a '50%' off sale. Many, many shops do it and it's called price establishing.

They are able to do it because they have multiple stores where they can all put up the prices for a short time before bringing them down, local independents cannot do this.

A lot of independents are members of groups such as ACG, SMG, Flooring One, Greendale, etc These groups represent up to 300 retailers each. They negotiate on behalf of their members with manufacturers for the best prices. They also don't have the overheads or necessary margins to work to that the likes of Carpetright have.

With regard to de-branding a product, which is what Carpetright and other high street stores do. Carpetright hold stock in their warehouse at Purfleet. As they buy the full 'creel' or 'batch' of carpet they can ask the manufacturer to make the same colour but at 38oz instead of 40oz or make it 100% polyprop instead of nylon. This would mean that it is not necessarily the same carpet even though it may look and feel the same.

The fitters at Carpetright are liable for any fitting complaints and that is a fact. Check when you have a quote to be sure.

I would always advise shopping around and finding the best quote and service.

And would not that be shown on the label?

so to sum up ......... its a different carpet at a different price ??

No trying to deceive. Wot's the problem?
