We Philips phone when PC is on via USB. Then in kitchen we have oven, fridge and travel kettle. That's it. We don't use anything else. No microwave, no toaster, no pads and other useless pieces of crap that just sponge on the energy. We don't have kids so we have no reason to be 'in with the times' lol. Mainly just read here to pass our time. Not had a TV in about 8 years now.
Fridge freezer will be going off in winter. We don't have anything in the freezer except bottles of water as all the food we buy is fresh produce. In winter it's cool enough for our weekly produce to be outside. So in winter I'll just switch everything off at the mains when leaving for college or volunteering.

Sounds pretty similar to my routine :-)0 -

44. Get rid of your normal kettle they use so much energy! We use a travel kettle. It only does 2 cups at a time but costs a fraction of the price!
Not trueIn theory a 'normal' 3kw kettle uses the same amount of energy to heat 2cups of water as a travel kettle does

Ours is only 75watt of power. It does 2 cups perfectly.
Another tip is to refill the kettle as soon as you have made a brew so the water goes to room temperature and doesn't take as long to boilThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

If the rating on your travel kettle is lower than a 'normal' kettle it does not necessarily mean you are using less electricity to boil the water.
If it takes a travel kettle 2mins to boil where the normal one takes 30sec then you need to multiply the travel kettle rating by 4 to get an equivalent rating for it to enable you to make a comparison.YNWA

1st I don't know any kettle that takes 30 seconds to boil
2nd 70W x4 = 280W which is still a lot better than 2kW ie 2000W
Regardless our bill hasn't gone up from changing and it makes me feel more ethical:T

The kw rating is how much energy it uses over the space of an hour
It takes a certain amount of energy to boil a cup of water, the energy rating of the kettle is irrelevant really. The only thing you're gaining by using a small wattage kettle is a lot more time to prepare your cups for the hot water, when it eventually arrives
You feel more ethical, that's the main thing :A0 -

I started doing this and it really does cut down the time to boil, especially if you boil it alot, also try purring too much boiled water in a flask until you are ready to use again.
I charge my phone in the mornings whilst I shower and eat breakfast, only works if you get up early enough though, and if its really flat I charge it in the car on the way to work. Sadly I have to use the car as my bad back cant manage the last 2 miles of the cycle home...but I plan to keep trying!!!
Great post, thanksDebt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.
