My OH uses a ridiculous amount of shower gel, I think he drinks it to be honest, so might try the soap thing.

    That made me laugh. :T

FireWyrm - what block of soap do you buy?

I only buy real natural cold pressed soap from reputable dealers like this one : http://stores.ebay.co.uk/pampercafe/. I have a thing for her camomile and jasmine soaps.

You can get at least 12 bars out of a block, so works out to about a £1.50 per bar. We have skin allergies in the house and so I only buy goat milk (paraben and SLS free obviously). I have made soap, it isnt that hard, but I prefer to buy this particular thing as she does it so nicely. The soaps produce a beautiful rich lather that I have only seen with Dove. Unfortunately, Dove brings me out in a shocking rash as do most commercial soaps. I tried a single bar of her soap from this shop - no rash. I know this stuff is comparatively expensive, but the art of money savings is not scrimping, but continuing to live well on less.

For those wondering what soap nuts are : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EcoZone-Soap-Nuts-1kg-330-Wash-Eco-Friendly-Allergy-Free-Laundry-Berries-/141289291279?pt=UK_HomeGarden_CLV_Cleaning_CA&hash=item20e57f7e0f

I'm all for saving money but this sounds like a joyless dreary life to me.

I smiled at the one about wearing a jumper and turning the heating down. I have just got rid of a male lodger who just wouldn't do this. In mild spring weather he walked around in a t -shirt and shorts but wanted the thermostat at 24 C. It was perfectly normal for him and he couldn't accept any suggestion to do things differently!

    • Use an old credit or store card as a pan scraper
    • If you travel with work always take the hotel free toiletries, I haven't had to buy any for home so far this year. Same goes for tea bags and coffee
    • When getting to the end of tubes like toothpaste and tom puree, use a rolling pin to squeeze out every last drop

  • Great post with great ideas. I would add cutting your own hair. I use clippers because my hair is a fuzzy mess, but also because I would not dream of paying for somebody to cut it every month!

Nope not at all :) It's just not ruled by consumerism. Joy is determined by the person involved.

Yes I agree with this. I always do both our hair with the clippers. Though we did go to the hairdressers for our wedding dos though lol.

Mouthwash also. We have an old mouthwash bottle which we fill with water and put in about 15 drops of peppermint essential oil.

Lots of great ideas here however I won't be giving up shampoo any time soon either. I can't bring myself to imagine doing the washing up with my husbands old underpants though lol, is that really what no 24 means?!
