Galloway Smashes Scottish Separatists with Stellar Speech in the Spectator

what do you mean 'shadow' a currency?....
I think he means that a hypothetically independent Scotland will maintain a fixed exchange rate by some means....in what way will oil be a factor?
He likely believes that a hypothetically independent Scotland will get a lot of money from North Sea oil and gas reserves. Although since UK government revenues from oil and gas production amounted to £4.6 bn in the last fiscal year, perhaps not quite as much as he thinks.0 -
I don't think so, there's a world of difference between a government worker getting decent remuneration for an honest days work, than an area of the UK getting an extra £1.3K per head spent on them just by dint of them being Scottish. You present as a steelyeyed privateer, let's see you justify the extra public spend the Scots receive, I reckon you can't!

Mr Galloway does seem to reference what can only be described as a determined attitude on currency union.
No Scottish person should assume a formal union will be therefore offered, but of course they are free to shadow any currency they wish. Oil will back their ability to do so.
I don't understand why this latter option is not seriously floated as a plan B. It is within their control. You don't really want to start life as an independent country reliant on foreign fiscal policy do you?
Because the SNP aren't very confident that Scots would actually want independence if it were presented warts and all. So are employing a strategy of lying to people with nonsensical putative currency unions and rubbish about Eastenders and it's availability via the BBC.
Ergo they arey promoting Independence by trying to guarantee that the UK teat will continue to be there to suckle on if people don't like it.
Bunch of complete frauds in my opinion.0 -

Why do you want Scotland to stay part of the Union if they're the parasites that you and others try to paint them as?We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

You do know that my possible early retirement probably saves the taxpayer money don't you?
No justification forthcoming as yet on why you and your fellow
countrymen get all that extra cash.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

Scotland receives 9.2% of public spending and contributes 9.4% of tax revenues.
That includes any oil revenues which, as per the 1982 United Nations Convention on the law of the sea. Anything within the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone rightly belong to Scotland.
I'll ask you as well Tromking, why do you want Scotland to remain part of the Union? We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Oh dear try again, the oil is only solely yours when and if you go it alone. As we're still one country I fail to see why you merit the extra cash.
I'm genuinely relaxed about Scotland's place in the Union, but if you guys decide to stay then the present inequitable arrangements need to change in my opinion. Further devolution and the proposed tax raising powers should sort it out.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

I have never once said this. I am talking about the SNP. An organisation I have about a much affinity for as Ukip.
I think if people find such parochial atavism applies to them they need to have their heads examined.
Sorry if that includes you.0 -
