DLA new claim timescale

Hi, my child's doctor suggested I make a claim for dla for my son, iv filled in the extremely intensive for and posted it off. Does anyone know how long it will be before I get a decision? I included all paperwork ie paediatrician reports, diagnosis letters, school IEP, letter from school, medication list ect ect

Thankyou

I think it's somewhere around 11 weeks. But some people don't wait as long because their claim is straight forward.

If it is a new claim, it will be PIP, not DLA. The current wait time on new claims is 6 months and upwards.

I do hope you have filled in the correct form, as if your son has not received DLA before you will be asked to claim PIP which is the correct benefit, which has replaced DLA for new claimants.

    DLA still exists for children.

Hi, when you got your refusal did they tell you why they had refused? Did you include all your diagnosis letters, consultant letters, medication list ect?

I ask because I included all those things so if it gets refused I'm not sure I'll have grounds for appeal, what else could I give them that I haven't already?

Sorry for all the questions and thankyou for your reply :)

DLA is not really to do with the diagnosis as such, but is to do with said childs care/mobility needs over & above another child of similar age. That is the way to approach a claim like this. Do they have continence problems & need fresh bedding help with toiletting in night that type of thing. So if they do refuse then go at it from that sort of angle with the appeal.

Thankyou so much for the advice, I did mention the incontinence and not getting much sleep, having to make.sure I'm available instantly when my son wakes during the night ect. There isn't much information around I'm beginning to wish I'd sought proper help filling in the form because it seems if you don't word it right they just don't consider it. Then you have to go through an appeal process which takes a lot longer. I can see why they make it so difficult to claim but when I th ink of all those people out there that could be entitled to It but just can't face the whole application process it makes me a little sad

It sounds like you may have done what I was trying to get across. I believe that was why my 1st claim for it went through as I did exactly that.

Hi they did give me a couple of reasons for refusal but you could tell they hadn't read the form I sent in all documents from doctors , school etc if they refuse you can call them and give the reason why you want a reassessment and only if that is refused can you then appeal.
