Two wrongs don't make a right!
Not paying rent is one issue, taking possessions is another (particularly the way it was done!). I'd feel violated if my LL marched into my home whilst I was out and took my possessions. And what happens if those items are later lost, damaged or stolen - is the LL going to replace them? The rent should have been paid on time but it's absolutely not acceptable for a LL to take the law into their own hands like this.0 -

Apologies for the delay - I don't come on here too often.If the LL is owed money then he should follow due process and take the tenant to court.
This LL is taking the law into his own hands, which is not acceptable in a civilised society. He is acting like a vigilante.
My point was that it would/could be lawful for the landlord to apply his common law 'right of set off'. This is not taking it into his own hands, this is applying the law of the land to his situation. I'm not sure if it applies in this case but it was an interesting thought.0
