I'm wondering if the landlord could argue he was using his right of set off.

If the LL is owed money then he should follow due process and take the tenant to court.

This LL is taking the law into his own hands, which is not acceptable in a civilised society. He is acting like a vigilante.

So if he leaves the keys lying around I can 'borrow' my neighbour's flashy car as long as I leave a note saying that I'll be returning it at the end of the year? Fantastic! :)

    No, cars are treated differently.

Nope, car thefts do come under theft but a different principle applies. You just merely need to take the car without the owners consent to commit an offence. Different for items that aren't vehicles.

Replace "car" with "lawn mower" or "tv" and I think my point is still made. I'd be pushing the Police to investigate this crime.

Is there a particular reason your rent is late this month? Is it likely to happen again next month?

Did we ever get an answer to this?

    Pay your rent?

The horror! Ban this poster immediately! The OP is obviously a downtrodden young person, exploited by the "boomer" evil landlord and has run into trouble due to circumstances beyond their control such as losing their job, mental health issues, going on a drinking binge. Who's to say? But the very idea that the OP should have to pay their rent on time is simply horrifying. Who agrees with me, comrades?

Are you serious???? Please tell me you are joking.
So you say you don't agree with his actions but you admire him? Well make your mind up as you are double crossing yourself there by contradicting what you say.

I don't agree with the landlords actions, as they are not the right thing to do, but I admire him because it takes a lot of courage to go through with what a lot of landlords would like to do to non paying tenants.
Would you be happy if someone did this to you if you were renting & had trouble paying the rent? Or would you sit back, smile & admire what they've done?

No one on the end of action is happy, whether the person taking the action was justified or not, so your point is moot.

You chose to replace the OP's items with "car" specifically to emphasise a point, so replacing it with "TV" is not making your point, as that is the situation that we already have.

I chose "car" because that was the first thing that came to mind :) - not knowing they are being treated differently.

I think we're in agreement here. If we use "TV", this is the situation we currently have, and the idea of me "borrowing" my neighbour's TV being 'not a crime' as long as I leave a note documenting my intention to return it at some point in the future sounds ridiculous.

Seems to me this is a crime, and the Police should be responding appropriately.

Okay, now add to the scenario you outlined that your neighbour owes you £500, that he had agreed in writing to pay you back a week earlier.

Do you see how that makes a black and white situation grey?

The police have real crimes to investigate.

No. There is a procedure for enforcing that written agreement for the £500, and me taking the law into my own hands and going all vigilante is not it.
