You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Never heard of it either. Seems to (maybe) be a thing in Scotland and Ireland.

maybe - but I've never heard of it at all (east coast of scotland).

There was an Irish tradition that you would give a child a pair of shoes when they got their first tooth because it was to signify that the child would soon be taking their first steps. However, I don't know whether this is still observed in Ireland. The Italians also have the same tradition, so it could possibly be a Catholic one?

I did a quick Google and found a forum in which a poster from Dublin makes a quick reference to the shoes tradition - http://babyandbump.momtastic.com/baby-club/941925-first-tooth.html - so perhaps it is still observed to some degree in Ireland?

Ahh, naughty me skimming the thread, I see one or two others have mentioned the tradition in relation to Ireland :)

My mum found my eldest's first tooth, my SIL found the middle one and neighbour found babies. It's a well known and carried on tradition here where I live, they all bought them their first pair of proper walking shoes.
Just something that we all do. I found my neighbour's, daughters first tooth so bought her her first pair also. I suppose it depends on how each family are brought up and whether they carry on traditions?
