    Hello everyone

    A few years ago a friend of mine ended up very ill in hospital after eating reheated rice and I haven't kept any after the meal since. Like so many say rice is a cheap food for me my health is more important

    I'm now wondering about rice puddings. I have a favourite dessert which consists of cooking rice, cooling it down and putting it in the fridge in individual dishes. It is then served later in the day with a fruit compote. We have never been ill afterwards but now I am wondering.
    The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best

    I really hate throwing out leftovers of anything edible, but when I make a curry I do the rice in rice bowl of electric steamer, and do enough rice for DS although sometimes he`ll just eat the curry with bread (!) I wouldn`t attempt to use the leftover rice, sorry.

    In my case it was learned the hard way - Nine weeks in hospital, with a variety of potentially serious complications from the rice-based toxins, then over a year of dealing with the lingering effects of the secondary toxins that result from bacterial activity - which cannot be killed by any cooking. They keep coming back to hit you time and time again, just whenever you think you might be feeling a little bit better.

    This was from either rice served with an airline meal or from a London restaurant - It was unfortunate that I had eaten rice on two occasions in the days preceding falling ill - they could never pin-down just which was the source.

    All-in, its really not worth it! :(

    I regularly make large batches of curries and other foods which I mix rice into. I then heat them up and eat them in portions up to 4 days later. I've been doing this for years and haven't had an issue.

    I've often heard about the dangers of reheating rice but there are plenty of ready meals sold with pre-cooked rice in them. Those ready meals can be a week or so old by the time you eat them so I'm not sure why that's not an issue.

    Those ready meals are invariably packaged in an inert gas or nuked by the palette-load with Gamma Ray Sterilisation. Most normal kitchens don't have these tech wonders to help avoid poisoning.

    But yes, decent quality rice properly cooked, cooled, then chilled in your own kitchen is safe for a few days but frankly its so cheap/easy to do from scratch that its still questionable if the risk is worth it.

    Then you can get-on to the matter of heavy metal toxicity in rice and again, more than twice a week is exposing you to other long-term risks.

    I must say I've never had an issue with rice and from the sound of it I should be dead by now!
    I've always cooked batches for lunches and breakfasts and not always fridged straight away. I'm not condoning it if it is a bad thing as this thread does suggest, I'm just saying it never would have occurred to me to keep it differently to other grains or pasta or whatever, and I've not (touch wood) had a problem :cool:

    I can remember years ago on a food hygiene course being told to treat cooked rice the same as meat. Cool quickly and refrigerate. If I want to make a rice salad I will cook the rice then run under cold water and refrigerate ASAP then add the bits and what is left over is binned
