Here's a very interesting interview with John Swinney in The Independent. They really do want it all, don't they. The arrogance of the man is unbelievable.

Which parts do you disagree with? so that we can discuss.

I found it long a boring, spending the first 4 paragraphs describing the office (not the interview) and it was 8 paragraphs in before they started to discuss the interview.

P.S. I can't believe there is yet another independence post. Just glad I didn;t start it so it should not come in for the same non topic flack.

Where to start? Where to end? Let's see, just three will do:

    1. Scotland decides which services it wishes to share? Err, if Scotland wishes to become independent, then independent it will be. Bit of an oxymoron to be an independent country (with all the huge costs and social disruption associated with this) that is dependent on another country's provision of services.
    2. Scottish banks will be bailed out by international funding? How independent is that?
    3. There will be a sterling currency zone? According to whom? According to Swinney. And how independent is that?
I just would have thought he would be more clever than to lay bare so much inconsistency, hubris and arrogance.

    1. Scotland decides which services it wishes to share? Where does the report state that Scotland decides which services they share? I see references such as " if they share a common currency", "In some circumstances there’s an argument for continuing to share services" or "if we shared something like the DVLA". these are not arrogant comments in my opinion Err, if Scotland wishes to become independent, then independent it will be. Bit of an oxymoron to be an independent country (with all the huge costs and social disruption associated with this) that is dependent on another country's provision of services.
    2. Scottish banks will be bailed out by international funding? What the article states is that he said "bank bailouts which points to evidence that in future no country would be expected to rescue its banks on its own, that these are international banks and the international community must respond collectively". There is already an International Monetary Fund (IMF) that has reserves to How independent is that? Here's an example. IMF approves $17bn Ukraine bailout package. Surely learning from previous global credit crunch should be seen as a positive thing
    3. There will be a sterling currency zone? According to whom? According to Swinney. No not according to Swinney. He stated "if they share a common currency." Again, not arrogant and something which will be negotiated should a positive independence result prevail. And how independent is that?
I just would have thought he would be more clever than to lay bare so much inconsistency, hubris and arrogance.

I would say he has been pretty consistent and certainly not arrogant.
I'm not sure where you think he shows an overestimation of his own competence or capabilities.

    I guess so.
I would have appreciated if you articulated in the article where he was arrogant

I don't understand this talk about how Scots banks would be bailed out. Which banks is he talking about? HBOS and RBS will necessarily have their bases in England. EU rules do not allow a bank to be domiciled in a country where they do not have the majority of their business. They will be English Banks, with English headquarters.

As to a currency union, why do the yes camp keep mentioning it? There will be no currency union. The parties who could form a government for the rest of the UK have ruled it out. Everyone except the Scots have stated that they will not enter one. It is outright dishonesty for them to keep claiming that it's an option.

Oh, it goes far beyond that though. He is happy to state how the rest of the UK would regulate financial services, how the MPC would have a say in Scots currency, and so on, as "independent" bodies. They may stay independent, they may not, but whatever is the case, they will have no reason to care in any way, shape, or form what their decisions mean for a foreign country.

He asserts that we'd be happy to share the DVLA, adding (as you ypoint out) on the sharing that "We will do it if suits us to do so."

Zero acknowledgement that anyone else may have a say in this.

It doesn't seem to really matter how many times the SNP are told there won't be a sterling zone, and that if they vote themselves independent then independence is what they are going to get. They will just will not accept that a putative rUK won't dance to Scotland's drum because they want it to.

It's a bizarre exhibition of almost total denial of reality, which is exactly mirrored by all the other nats who trawl the comments section of everything on a daily basis (including here).
