Nobody wants the Lira. Sterling, dollars or euros will be much better recieved.

Can you even get lira travellers cheques?
Either take sterling cash or use an ATM - or both. No point in paying two lots of exchange fees to use $$ or €€ unless you already have them and want to use them up.
  • bzug...Thanks for that, I never thought of using the ATM machines, I have checked my banks web site for ATM locations. Brill Idea x

    Hi Thrifty

I too am of to Turkey for the first time in just over a week. Friends i've spoken to who have been there before, say the exchange rate out there is generally a lot better than back here in the UK, so what i have done is got £100 in Turkish Lira to take with me to get by on for the first couple of days until i get my bearings out there and am taking rest of money in streling.

I am also taking my visa card, but i don't know about your bank, but my bank (Lloyds TSB) charge a 2.75% exchange commision and only give you exchange at whatever the going rate is back here in the UK.

I was on an ex-pats site for people now living in Turkey and this guy says that whilst the exchange rate over here is in the 2.48 - 2.50 ratio, he says you can get nearer 3.0 out there in some places, so i think taking streling out with you will get you the better deal than using the ATM's and being charged the rates back here.

As i said before, i'll take my card but only use it as an emergancy back up should i run out of sterling.

When I went last year, everything was priced in Euros! Maybe not in the more remote country-side, but on the tourist trail there was no need or use for lira.

Take very few lira as all they want is sterling...when your haggling for stuff they will quote you in pounds....2 for a tenner etc...cheaper than asda!!And don`t forget.....HAGGLE!its expected.......if they want 20 quid aim to get it for a tenner...if you don`t get the price you want...be polite...say no and walk away....9 times out of 10 they`ll come after you and sell for the price you want.......most of all...have fun!!!!its fantastic!

  • Sterling, Euros and just a few Lira.

Olu Denis is stunning - we were at Lykia World a year gone May and it was fabulous.

Don't forget about the visa entry? charge at the airport. It is £10 sterling for every member of the party. We only had Lira and caused the rest of our flight to wait for nearly 10 mins because they really, really did not want to take it in Lira

    Have a great time!

    Chunters

We are off to Lykia in just over a week and I am wondering what currency to take. I know that bar bills and cab bills can be paid at Lykia with the credit card. I also assume that most of the shops will take credit cards but was wondering whether to take euro's or sterling for the markets, cafe's etc whilst out shopping.

Anyone going to Turkey from Scotland be sure to take English notes with you as they will not accept Scottish notes for the £10 visa payment.

Not sure about shopping with Scottish notes though, but probably better to have all English as they didn't accept them on the plane either.

Have a great time. Would love to go back to Turkey.
