Gas for BBQ

Not really sure if this is the place to ask but seeing its gas related I'll give it a shot.

I'm a real novice with regard to gas BBQing and I set on up today. Manual states it required propane gas...but some of the reviews on the Argos site states it uses patio gas.

What is the difference?

There are two types of gas. Propane and Butane. Each requires a different regulator, as shown in the above link.
Either is suitable for a gas BBQ.

Best to ignore 'patio gas', especially if you are confused!!!

Did it come with a gas hose and regulator?

"Patio Gas" is a brand of gas, by Calor, that is designed for use with BBQs. If the BBQ came with a red regulator, then it is likely for that type of bottle.

All you need to do is find a "Patio Gas" stockist on the Calor website and go along, pay a deposit and pick up your first bottle.

From memory, Morrisons Filling Station do them.

The "Patio Gas" bottles come with a handy guage, so you have an indication of how much gas is left.

They come in 2 sizes. 1 is a managable 5kG or so of Gas, the other (I think) is 17kG and is a lot harder to lift, but will obviously last longer and is better value.

try an source a cylinder free if you don't have one.
    (freecycle local tip etc.)

Some are swappable for the correct type for the regulator provided with your BBQ.

usually loads of blue/butane ones about.

Patio gas is a way of charging you more by changing the name of something!

Calor is the main supplier of gas and propane comes in red bottles.

There is Propane and Butane. Both will run a gas BBQ but use different regulators.
Butane will give gas down to an air temperature to about 2c.
Propane will give gas down to temperatures well below freezing. Usually used by all the year around Caravaners.

Butane will probably be the best for you. (Blue bottle)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

The regulator & hose were included. I have read about the different colours but this one is silver/gold and has PROPANE on it. I think I;'ll find a pal who has a blue bottle to see if it fits!

Thanks for the help guys x

Butane & Propane have different fittings on the cylinders and so does Patio Gas (which I believe is propane in a posh cylinder) so you need a cylinder that fits your regulator or a regulator that fits your cylinder. Patio gas uses a 27mm clip-on regulator usually red in colour
It's not difficult but you do need to check what regulator you've got to make sure it will fit. Butane has a left handed male thread on the cylinder (except that some 7kg and 13kg cylinders have a 21mm clip on regulator usually coloured blue blue) whereas most propane cylinders have a left handed female thread and the regulator is red.

If yours say Propane then it won't fit a blue bottle - has it got a threaded nut (female for butane or male for propane on it or has it got a lever or tap on the side. Look for a size marking (20mm, 21mm or 27mm). It should also have the working pressure in mbar or mb, butane is usually 28-30mbar and propane is 37mb

have a look here to see if you can identify yours http://www.calor.co.uk/help-and-advice/technical-and-safety/gas-cylinders/gas-regulator-guide
