True. However it is a normal requirement in most employment contracts that you don't do anything that will bring the company into disrepute. Even if this is not explicitly spelt out it could easy be argued to be an implied duty.

If you are in a public facing role then, even if you don't identify your employer, you may be recognised by clients and competitors. If your behaviour is such that it would make them think less well of the company then that is very much the employer's concern.

Obviously that isn't limited to social networks it could also happen down the pub!

I'm no idiot. How dare you insult me without even having the faintest idea who I am. I just believe in a person's right to privacy.

If you don't want to employ an idiot - well that is what the recruitment process is for.

Employers do not own their employees lives.

They don't own their employees lives but many employers will have expectations about the behaviour of their staff outside the workplace....and in many cases they are right to because things a person says/does in their own time can have an impact on their employer - ie if the employee trash talks about the employer or an employee in a responsible role can be seen on social media behaving in a thoroughly irresponsible way which may put customers off or make people question the judgement of the employer for employing them. In some cases what you say on social media can have a direct impact on your job. There's a recent case where someone working for a council made inappropriate comments online about someone her department was prosecuting - what she said could have scuppered the prosecution and ended up with the council facing a huge legal bill.

I'm sure you're not an idiot and can understand that.

You do have rights to privacy but you need to take some responsibility for protecting that privacy by not making public things you want to keep private. Complaining about an employer looking at information that is publicly available is like walking around naked with the curtains open and accusing a passer by who gets a glimpse of being a peeper.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

However, why employers think its acceptable to go snooping around employees social media sites is beyond me. What people do in their own time should be of no concern whatsoever to an employer. All they should be concerning themselves with is the employees conduct/performance at work.

Faceache can be a useful tool in HR, I usually just look on the users linked in account, but have occasionally looked up their Facebooks.

The one that stood out was a young lady who had pictures of her snorting big lines of posh! with descriptions like "banging nite out"

Same here, but the point is, we shouldn't have to. Whats next I wonder? Recording the conversations of employees when they are enjoying a quick pint down the pub - just in case they are bad mouthing the boss to their mates ...
