Could you make up some little cards to give to people that explain about your lack of hearing and how best to communicate? Then if you join a group or class you could hand them out. I think a big proportion of people would try much harder to communicate with you if only they knew what to do.
I am quite shy in real life so that would inhibit me with someone in your situation, although I would smile at you.
Hearing dog sounds great too. If you got one, you could maybe eventually take him out on visits to groups or so on. Nothing like an animal to break the ice.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
See if there are classes at your swimming pool like Aqua Fitness (or similar names). Some will be aimed at people with mobility problems or recovering from operations.0

I also think it would be worth going to your GP. Perhaps book a double appointment and take a list of things to discuss. Brainstorm anything and everything (perhaps with your daughter and maybe even ask your daughter to go with you). You could see if there are any advances in your type of deafness, any different things that may help it that weren't available before, any research groups or surveys that you can get involved in (you may not change your deafness but you may still help change the world!).
Maybe make some different headings and have one for the depression etc.
Could you visit the local library and see what they may have around to help.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
Hi
I am in the same position as your eldest daughter and really don't get to see my mum as much as I'd like. My Mum is very hard of hearing not profoundly deaf so I managed to get a phone from rnid. We talk most days. It can be frustrating for Mum as she doesn't always catch every thing I say but at least we maintain contact.
Would you and your eldest daughter make a set time every couple of days so you can email back and forth? At least it would widen your circle of contact slightly. It can be enough, sometimes, just to touch base to make you feel involved in their life.0 -

Spice Activity Club (although this club specialises in outdoor activities it also does lots of meals and pub nights, and there are plenty of over age 40 people there).
the spice one sounded like something I would be interested in but its glasgow/edinburgh/aberdeen all too far from me.my daughter and myself spent a weekend last year looking for something I the perth area neither of us could find anything plus I don't drive xi came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p0 -
Summer, sorry to hear you're feeling so low. There's been some really good suggestions to help you, but I was wondering if you've tried googling 'Befriending Service for Deaf' and your local area? I know someone in a similar situation as yourself and they made a lovely friend, who understood all the problems they faced.
thank you I will look this up as never heard of it, I asked at audiology dept years ago was there any clubs I could join she said she had no idea, I I always feel I have been made to be a nusiance about being deaf, my kids were great I was always terrified about a fire starting in the night had it drummed into my girls if smoke alarm went off they were to hold hands come to my room and waken me then we would deal with it, thankfully never needed them to do it, xxi came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p0 -

That's simply not true.
I see you joined Mse 5yrs ago but not posted a lot, if you're a regular reader you'll have seen that you're not on your own there are many people that post saying they live by themselves and have few if any friends. It's not unusual that many people can go for weeks without speaking to anyone other than the checkout girl at the supermarket.

sorry I meant the nearest meet up group was 25 miles away I have no idea as to where the nearest deaf group is.going to look into sense see where it is thanks xgeminilady wrote: »Hi,I have suffered depression and know how awful it can be,go back to the Doctors and get some medication if it helped before.Have you confided in your Daughter that lives near?maybe she could help you get out and meet new people. Also why don't you look into lessons to teach you the breast stroke if it will help your back problems and you might meet new friends at the classes.I know you said the nearest deaf group is 25 miles away but there must be people with hearing problems that live nearer, not sure how you would get in touch with them though,as someone said you could contact sense or the group that is too far away for ideas.i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p0 -
