Pub refused to make contactless payment

Prior to chip n pin I never did get defrauded, the introduction of Chip n Pin was meant to resolve defrauding issues, alas it did not take long before it got compromised, internet banking was the next safest method introduced by the banks, up until that too got compromised.
Excluding viruses, trojans, and people leaving passwords around, how exactly did internet banking get compromised?0 -

I would like to know why you believe Chip and Pin to be compromised too?
AFAIK flaws in the systems and protocols have been identified but at the moment they don't actually pose a real world threat. The first time I was ever defrauded was from a chip n pin card in a dodgy shoe shop

Correlation does not necessarily equal causation.0 -

Again, I haven't worked in payments since contactless came in properly so that might be rubbish!
Sorry but yes that's wrong.Contactless is billed the same as a standard debit card transaction, typically 10-20p. In fact the acquiring bank I work for provide a discounted rate for Contactless transactions.
The machine may be a new one which can support contactless but it doesnt mean they have it enabled.
If the terminal's screen displayed the Contactless logo, then it was enabled.0 -
just get over it?0

To be honest, I'd prefer a pub to not have contactless enabled, especially as they're taking your card so they can put it in the machine. If you have to enter your PIN, you have a chance to check the amount.
I can all to easily imagine somebody adding a few extra pounds, taking a customers card, and then tapping it without the customer noticing. Especially in an alcohol establishment.0 -
I've always been told my contactless payment card would request a pin every so often (LTSB) - but I've never been requested to enter my pin and I must have used it over 50 times - how exactly does the pin checking functionality work with contactless?
In terms of the topic, I find contactless fantastic - so much easier, and I'm quite comfortable using it in pubs (Wetherspoons accept it for drink only purchases as do quite a few of my local pubs).
I did once have my card stolen out of my back pocket whilst in a bar, and they'd seen me type my card - they then withdrew £300 from the cashpoint outside, but that was refunded in a couple of days. Contactless would actually have helped in that situation!0 -

Presumably they were not 50 consecutive contactless transactions and you made some C+P transactions in between.0 -

This winds me up so much. The point of C+P and contactless is that no one touches my card except me.
Systems and protocols really should have been updated by now.I can all to easily imagine somebody adding a few extra pounds, taking a customers card, and then tapping it without the customer noticing. Especially in an alcohol establishment.
I wouldn't have thought so. They can't exactly add £5 on, and then pocket £5 in cash out of the till. They'd only be making more money for their employer.
Maybe in small independent pubs ... but I still doubt it.0 -

In some pubs they enter the amount on the machine rather than it being directly connected to the till, so 'mistakes' can happen. I bought some drinks tonight and it came to £15, if they had said £18, I don't think I would have even thought about the extra until later.0
