Buy an ex ADT Astra 1.7DTi estate in white for £1500 and keep the rest in the bank.

Or an ex CHUBB Megane estate..

Consider an Astra, petrol or diesel, like this one, above your budget, but would be another option

I have found a VW Golf 1.9 TDI - 2005 with 122'000 miles on the clock for £2800 (but ill haggle on this). Its just had its Dual Mass Flywheel replaced and has Full Service History. In your eyes would this be a good buy? pretty sure the 1.9 does not have a DPF, so apart from Cambelt nothing jumps out at me as a potential spanner in the works unless the DMF replacement would not give me 40-60K extra

The Mondeo seems the wisest shout so far, but if you're reluctant to look at something that big (im sure it's not that much bigger than standard hatch's!) the Civic should be worth a look at? the boot is huge, and can easily seat 5 adults. 2.2 diesel may not be wisest choice for your mileage, but is £125 a year tax, the 1.8 petrol could be worth a look at.

Hi Harvey its the 105 BHP which is apparently the most reliable engine VW/Audi have produced in recent years.

Certainly some Mondeo loving going on! I would need to speak to my OH and see if i can convince her on the estate idea again if i went down that route.

Mr Imp bought a huge Rover diesel estate which I refused to drive for a few months as it's so long. After my first reluctant drive in it I was fine. I even drove it 200 miles to visit the in laws recently, and I can mange to reverse it in to our garage. I'm used to little cars, but it took very few miles to get the hang of driving such a big car.

To be honest, as long as you are aware how much extra its costing you because its 'fashionable' then it sounds fine

Octavia estate driver here. Huge boot but not a big car. On petrol vs diesel how are you doing your 12 k per year, if like me you drive 5 miles 2 school, stop drop kid off, then drive 2 miles to work, then do it again in the afternoon 5 days a week 40 weeks a year, with less than 1 mile on national speed limit road. Then a diesel is madness. If your doing 2. 100 mile at a time round trips a week then a diesel could work. What will break on my petrol car? The turbo.

    Hey MX5Huggy,

I drive 20 miles each way to work (4 days a week (other day i cycle)), this jounrey is 70% on 60mph quiet A roads. Shorter journeys mixed in during the week to the shops / dog walking areas. I would probably say that we will do one good drive (80+ miles) every other weekend. Maybe more if my Wedding Photography business keeps growing!:D

We also holiday in the UK a week at a time twice a year. Last 2 were Cornwall and Far far north Scotland (based in midlands so good drives). Even contemplating France if we went for a diesel.

Work journeys are about 8'000miles a year and we average 12'000 a year at the moment with the other trips and days out.

Would people still buy a diesel or would they buy a petrol car with higher tax and lower mpg?

    Thanks,
    Edd
