My rec would be something like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201405033904746/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/radius/100/page/4/onesearchad/used/postcode/ng348nh/price-to/2000/body-type/hatchback/fuel-type/diesel?logcode=p and use the other 2k to give it a full service and put the remainder in the bank to use for repairs etc.

    Trouble and worry free motoring.

Although I never pay more than a grand for my own cars

Will you guarantee that? And it's a Vauxhall

Not much wrong with the Vauxhall engine, may or may not have a DMF from the era, seems a low mileage though. Having said there's not much wrong, they do truly drive like an old diesel though.

With nearly 2k spare in the bank there is not many eventualities that are going to cause worry.

.......and yes its a Vauxhalll, they sell millions of 'em for a reason.

If the OP spends 4k on a car can you guarantee trouble and worry free motoring?

12,000 miles per year and you want diesel? Madness.

    Buy a petrol Mondeo/Mazda 6/X Type.

The money you save on diesel will soon get eaten away by DMF, DPF issues..

As for your OH not wanting to drive an estate.. Point out that they are easy to reverse etc as you can see where the rear is.

Diesel is a no brainer. We've one that does about 16000 miles a year. That saves us £1800 a year on fuel compared to one of our petrol cars. And another £200 on VED. Don't dismiss the fuel and VED savings based on what could happen. The saving is real.

We still save £1350 between the diesel and petrol even if we only did 12,000 miles. Choose a diesel without a DPF and a DMF, if you worry about them.

Usual MSE response in these situations is to shout 'Mondeo!'

I make that 3 shouts for a Mondeo, 4 if counting mine

Certainly some Mondeo loving going on! I would need to speak to my OH and see if i can convince her on the estate idea again if i went down that route.

A few cars being mentioned that don't suit the dog in the boot, it cant be a saloon type boot like the standard mondeo is.

Tempted by the idea of just buying older and putting the extra cash for emergency repairs.

For the petrol lovers what could be costly to repair on a petrol car with high mileage? Obviously things go wrong with them just like any other car so im just trying to get a handle on what big costs could be involved.

Thanks for all the feedback so far!!

Because petrol engines usually spend their life spinning faster than diesels as most of the torque higher up the range, they'll wear quicker. However in a well looked after modern petrol, quicker can still mean well over 200000 miles+ before it burns oil, loses compression, head gaskets go etc. but this is also true for diesel (if its a car I've owned previously, 80k is a good amount ;) ). Other than that, you'll be maintaining pretty much the same items on a petrol as you will a diesel, like cambelts unless a chain etc. Spark plugs are cheap and simple to replace. Most stuff on higher mileage cars I imagine will be things like suspension bushes, bearings, clutches etc
