Barclays

My son recently opened a current account with Barclays and told them that he has a bad credit history. They said that was no problem but he has now received a letter saying that they are closing his account, even though they provided him with a debit card. He cannot get an answer as to why this has happened. Can anyone give some advice please.

The best people to ask for reasons will be Barclays.

They are at liberty to close an account of they feel that there is a risk.

Was it done in branch or phone/online and what type of account
  • He opened the account in our local branch using his passport and a utility bill as identification. They told him it was no problem that he had a bad credit history and although there was cash card account he could have a basic current account with a Connect card. As he is now working he needs a bank account to have his salary paid but the letter he received says they are closing his account and cannot offer him any other banking services.

    Barclays strike again.
They are notorious for this dodgy practice of screwing around with the new customers and closing down newly opened accounts.

Yet another similar thread - one of many: Barclays - am I being accused of fraud?!

The T&C are in place for both parties and restrict their 'liberty'. However, they seem to believe that the T&C apply to customers only. I assume that in this case they typically failed to give at least two months' notice when closing the account.

If they've contravened their own terms and conditions then the recourse will be to the Financial Conduct Authority, once the OP has exhausted the internal complaints process.

I think the first thing to do is to get in touch with Barclays and ask why they have acted as they have. Depending on their response the OP can decide what to do next.

As they have the right to close the account with notice and without any reason, most people CBA to waste their time on complaining - and Barclays know this.

I bet that the reply will be vague and evasive as the inaссessible schizophrenics that close accounts keep the reasons secret even from the bank's frontline staff.

Well you know the OP says that the person has a bad credit history. Barclays hierarchy may have had a look at the submission and decided not to proceed. This, I'm afraid is the penalty you may have to pay if you don't keep your finances in order.

Having said that, it is a bit odd that he was told that it was ok to open an account and then they've subsequently pulled the rug as it were.

No. The penalty is to get refused with the account at the time of application, not to be messed around and get runaround.

What's odd for you is a norm for arrogant Barclays - to open an account after a brief check, then to close it suddenly after checking more thoroughly.

I'm afraid this type of behaviour is rife across the whole Barclays organisation.

We've seen regular stories on here about Barclaycard opening accounts, even letting the odd transaction through, then straight to account closed.

Sorry to hear about your sons plight but Barclays are superior to everyone else, they don't need to respond to customer concerns and heck, don't forget they don't even need customers - they are Barclays - the most brilliant, honest, diligent company in the world.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.

I think it's more about the quality of counter staff these days. Also, it may just be the case that staff are paid some kind of incentive for recruiting new accounts.......
