Can we not put a stop to automatic renewal !!!

Options
I am sick to death of having to cancel renewals every year due to AUTOMATIC RENEWALS it is infuriating and time consuming and a complete pain when it is overlooked (due to a house move in the meantime !!) and I then have to spend weeks chasing up to get MY MONEY refunded, why should we have to cancel seems entirely WRONG to me can we PUT A STOP TO AUTOMATIC RENEWALS how much are these companies making out of us

Yes, when the policy starts. Maybe one or two insist on it but just don't use them.

Whenever I've done an automatic renewal it's because it's been cheaper than an annual policy.
If you don't want to risk overlooking it, then don't agree it in the first place.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Its getting to the point that all of them are doing it ! and I go with the cheapest/value every year regardless, Im not paying £50 extra for the privelage of going to an insurer who doesnt have an automatic renewal, besides the fact they dont tell you until your renewal documents come through a year later, I think it should be like the new PPI refund all charges taken for not cancelling a renewal in time ! why is it down to us ... its getting ridiculous, AA, RAC, House insurance, Car insurance, etc, etc, STOP AUTOMATIC RENEWAL !! they do it for a few reasons and none of them for our benefit, main one being you forget to ring up in time to cancel the renewal to the office hours number, never online option ! just taking up my time and time and hassle taken in trying to get my money back for a policy I never asked to be renewed and charges they take for admin !!!!!!

So that's your choice. I have always been asked when the policy starts if I want it on auto - and I say no.

When I take out the policy I specifically state that I do not want automatic renewals, that I do not give permission for any further payments to be taken from my cards. That works for me.

Well I have NEVER been asked beforehand if I do or dont want automatic renewal ???? ...... but my point is why should it be our job, especially as more and more companies are doing it Not just insurance companies .... I always take out my insurance online and their is NEVER an option to cancel or request automatic renewal. Why is the onus on us to sort out automatic renewal cancellations it should Not be there in the first place it is probably because insurance companies realise most of us have wised up to the fact that we dont renew with the same company every year and we all shop around, as it is very rarely cheaper (in my experience in over 20yrs of insurance it has never been cheaper with the same co.) than getting a fresh quote every year as per martin's ethos :money:

But if you know your insurance is due and find a policy cheaper elsewhere all it takes is a phone call or an email or even a letter and its sorted.

I dont see the big deal with the complaints about autorenewal. Some of the people complaining did not have a new policy in place so would have been driving uninsured.

My premium had been static with the same insurer for about 4 years. This yeas was the 1st where comparisons came out cheaper. A simple call got me a discount but i found a quote even cheaper so moved elsewhere.

Would you rather forget teh renewal date and be uninsured?

No, I'd rather the old system of the insurer sending the reminders, and if you don't reply, they don't reinsure at a stupidly inflated price. But you get the reminder. Oddly enough, I have about a dozen annual insurance policies, and the business ones don't auto renew, even at a competitive price, but the consumer ones try to, at a ridiculous price. Go figure.

The regulator and the FOS are quite keen on automatic renewal.

It doesn't leave the policy holder uninsured through their own failure to act and the consequences of being uninsured are, let's face it, potentially significant.

It's very easy to deal with. Using one or more of the numerous electronic devices in your life you put in a reminder for a week or so before renewal. If you're a more traditional type use a paper diary.

When the reminder comes up, if you've not already dealt with the matter you:

    1. Shop around via comparison sites etc.
    2. Ring the existing insurer (or go online if appropriate) to confirm a renewal quote and spend a few minutes trying to beat them down on price.
    3. Decide where to insure.

    Repeat annually. Simples.

Take responsibility for your own insurance.
