Audi TT 150 vs BMW 318i E46

Hi guys! I kinda need you guys to give me some sensible advice on a purchase we may be making tomorrow as we are perhaps both too excited and may make a poor decision...

Current Car: BMW 318i E46
-- This car I picked up for £1550 about this time last year. Sadly it doesn't idle correctly since I bought it and I had to replace a rad hose a week after buying it. The digital display on the dash is busted so cannot read mileage etc. Tyres are a bit worn and has a bump on the wheel arch where someone backed into it a week after buying it... It must have about 140k on the clock though.

New Car: Audi TT 150
-- This car looks immaculate but will cost a cool £5995... but only has 51k on the clock. Strangely will cost me £30 a month for insurance rather than the £68 it currently is for the Beemer.

The Mrs is dead excited about getting it but I just don't know! Is it worth trading in and getting this Audi? Anyone had any experience with either or both of these cars?

Any and all help with be appreciated

  • So you have an older £1.5K sensible family car with some niggles, and you're looking at a shiny £6K 2 seater?

Don't be too persuaded by glossy showroom shine, that'll soon wear off.

What do you want/need from a car? You're comparing chalk with cheese here.

You have to remember not everyone is clued up on what e numbers are what on the BMW, the TT is ok if you just require 2 seats as the back seating is very limited even for the under 6 footers.
I had use of a TT for a few weeks, favoured the Golf , but then it's your money not the readers.

I'm not that fussy really as long as it is reliable (and not french)! I am really worried that the BMW is going to fail me as it uses a tonne of water and the idle is the thing I worry about most as it is pretty up and down.

The reality is that we have 2 cars (a clapped out micra the mrs has had for ages) and we only need 1 that we won't really use that much.

We don't plan on starting a family too soon so it's just the two of us at the moment :) I personally love VW Golfs but as always... the Mrs finds them ugly haha. Didn't even know it had rear seats!

Neither do most the owners, it's not only to do with family, who knows you may even be slightly sociable every now and then?
As posted above the two cars are for different customer, both respected in their own target audience.

What makes you think a TT will be relaiable..?! 150bhp will be ok, but wont be as fun as the higher output quattro.

I'd keep the E46 (much prettier than current 3 series IMO)

Audi TT is a decent car but bear in mind that it is really a hatchback in a roadsters shell - not a true roadster. If you want a roadster look at porsche boxster, honda s2000, bmw z4.

Though the audi TT being really based on a hatchback platform means it has a little bit more storage space than the roadsters above.

It depends on how much time you have on your hands to correct the faults in your exisiting car. It might be worth getting a quote to see how much it woul;d cost to fix the idling issue. It could be just a problem with a sensor or some other serious engine problem that will be an expensive fix.

The problem is - your car is going to be a hard sell for the bumper damage. People don't buy BMWs for runabouts- people buy it for the badge and image and a body damaged BMW is no good. If you want to sell you'll need to fix it - or drop your asking way low.

He's looking at a TT. He said nothing about wanting a roadster.

What on earth are you talking about? You do talk some gibberish sometimes!
