It has been pouring down here all day, we are literally paddling in the garden. Thank goodness it's brightening up now! Our chickens are not enjoying paddling about. They have been doing well and have laid all through winter (though less than before) but we've had a lot of soft-shelled or thin-shelled eggs and I don't know why - any ideas?
Our latest news is that we've been accepted as 'puppy socialisers' for Dogs for the Disabled and we have our new puppy, a cute golden Labrador who arrived 3 weeks ago and is now 11 weeks old. That means I have even less time for chatting than before of course. If you want to know what he looks like - he's exactly like the Andrex puppy.
My free range chickens have mixed poultry grit but used to pick out the shells and leave the grit but I figured they were getting enough anyway whilst foraging. I started buying oystershells and they eat loads of this. Egg shells are very hard.
Great diary Pippi.0 -
Thanks very much Pippi and Horseygirl, looks like more oyster shell is what's required. The stuff they get is a mix so perhaps not the best for the time of year - will let you know!
Has anyone tried the turnip cakes? I'm intrigued!
Glad you'reback online Pippi, and that you had a great holibob, and especially that you have a new job that you love! Congratulations, that sounds fab - tell us more details!0 -
Hey up Trog - I've eaten the turnip cake many times before (not me made though) and it is very scrummy - recipe looks like a lot of effort but not sure how it would taste with substitutions!- RT4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! Morning gals and non-gals (if any of you are lurking) hows life today a busy ole thread how lovely.
So today is a normal work from home day and a group session later, a walk, some gardening and maybe even some tidying.
I'm not sure about the last one.
Trog, job is helping mainly with some (specialist) propagation and plant sales. The 'specialist' is in brackets as, to be honest I don't want to think about how special some of this stuff is. Garden is a large estate less than 10 miles from home, perfect distance. 2 days a week, decent rate (I had to give them a ball park and you'd be proud cos I didn't opt for just anything, although it was hard). Garden is open to the public, has a large extensive woodland, linked borders around the house, huge walled garden with a prairie style planting of perennials and grasses. Tea room, shop, accommodation and has lots of p/t, f/t, volunteers and travelling workers as it also does the WWOOF scheme where you can come and stay and work for a few hours each day for cheap accommodation and grub.
Snowdrops are out at the mo in the woods, so the place is quite busy.to be honest I think its just what I needed, some nice chat with like minded folks and some graft.
Glad you got an answer to the hens
Oyster shells sound perfect.
RT turnip cake is lush!!I know it looks a bit like a faff but, if you do give it a go let us know. I'm so lazy I bought my stuff from the chinese supermarket frozen dumpling section
Horseygirl 123 - thank you very much for your help and nice to see you.
Starnac, you'd know where to find me, in the garden somewhereCheery waves hello lass, hope you're good

That job sounds ideal for you. Well done for not accepting anything pay wise though. And yay to being paid weekly! Sometimes that really helps.Goals for FebruaryDeclutter 2/50Money Made £0/£200Overpayments £0/£2000
