I'd calculate mine if the site didn't require Flash...it's a .gov site so I'm not surprised that there's unethical, poor quality software in use. We don't use heating, don't use any chemicals, don't eat processed foods, don't use drugs (legal or illegal), grow as much as we can and walk wherever possible.
I haven't started with solar/wind yet, my next step will be to take one of the few electrical things that I have and run it from solar, get an idea for it then look at a full system.
Children were born for thousands of years without human intervention. People are in poor health because of capitalism. People are oppressed because of capitalism. State education is just indoctrination into the system.
Where is this contract that you speak of? There isn't one, because I haven't entered into any contract. Safe environment? We're constantly at risk from the government and their mercenaries, just look at their destructive, war mongering actions throughout the world.
Doesn't matter where it came from, I'm using it now for my own purpose, if that upsets/offends/annoys you, bonus.
(I) - "I'd calculate mine if the site didn't require Flash..." - really odd, I would have thought that one who professes so much would actually attempt to be correct ... when using any of my Linux flavours the site simply returns a message stating that an HTML version is available ... did you actually try, or was it just more bluster ?
(II) - "I haven't started with solar/wind yet" ... good idea, get with the project and actually back up your personal beliefs with some action, then the 'capitalist fat cats' wont actually be mugging you as much .... I had my first pv cell to experiment with in the early 70s, the family had solar thermal a few years later, we had various stand-alone off-grid setups for a while and now have both grid-tied pv & thermal systems ...
(III) - "Children were born for thousands of years without human intervention .." - only if they were the product of some deity, or weren't human .... globally, people are in better health, live in less dire poverty and are less oppressed now than at any time in history, isn't this true ? ... strange that during all other forms of governance and ideology things were actually worse than under the currently prevalent democracy and capitalism ... I'm not saying that the combination is utopian, but there's a lot of evidence to conclude that the premise "People are in poor health because of capitalism. People are oppressed because of capitalism" as made is totally misguided ...
(IV) - "Where is this contract that you speak of? There isn't one, because I haven't entered into any contract" .... Did your parents not care for you ?, do you not care for your parents ?, will you not care for your children & loved ones ? .... for those of us who care, there's a recognition of obligation, an obligation in the form of a social contract written the day we were born ... but then again there are those who simply think and shout words along the lines of "me, me, me" and this is what I, and possibly others, are reading in these poorly thought through & constructed ideological misgivings ....
(V) - "Doesn't matter where it came from, I'm using it now for my own purpose" ... again, "me, me, me", it's like a stuck record (hopefully, you're old enough to remember what one of those is) ..... "if that upsets/offends/annoys you, bonus", but it doesn't annoy me - how can a picture of waders rapidly filling with water not bring a smile to everyone's face - red-faced fisherman excluded, of course .... so no bonus to award, sorry.
If you're intent is to continue a discussion on ideology, thinly disguising it with a little 'greenwash', and are content to be loosing badly in a debate with adults then carry-on here, else there are very many other places on this forum where the level of debate is far beyond what is available here, believe me - the water's very deep so I guess you'd simply be torn apart by far greater political & philosophical intellect ... another possibility would be to move to a stream where the water's shallower than the waders are tall ..... Of course, there's always the option of taking notice of the information being given by some pretty well informed members regarding your proposed future dwelling and actually bringing the thread back on subject .... the choice, as they say, is completely yours.

Good for you. I’m a huge fan of renewables, and believe that taking responsibility for your energy demands is a good (and interesting) thing to do.
But ….. you knew there was going to be a but didn’t you ……. Regarding solar, we are currently where we are, thanks to subsidies.
Note: I have no issue with subsidies, I fully support them, and the subsidies paid to renewables are utterly dwarfed by the direct and indirect subsidies paid to fossil fuels, and nuclear over the years.
However. If you’d like an example of leeching, or being party to a national/international contract (as Zeupater has tried to outline), then solar PV is a perfect example. Through the collection and distribution of subsidies, by multiple national governments, we have seen PV prices fall by around 90% this decade.
You may not like it, you may not believe it, but by taking part in PV, or just thinking about it, you are joining in, in an international contract to reduce costs for society, or if you prefer, leeching off of those that are happy to contribute to the long term thinking.
Thought: It may be a little naughty to mention this, since I’m looking back at 20th century history, but since you’re such a big fan of the word fascism, you may be interested to know that the nations that did the heaviest lifting with regard to PV (via feed in tariff schemes) in Europe are Germany, Italy and Spain.
It’s a funny old world isn’t it?

Hi
Search for Navitron...... probably as good as any of the well known 'brands', but far cheaper.

Really, the school holiday thing is such a pathetic argument, yet one of the really common typical arguments used by idiots that are incapable or too afraid of comprehending what they're responding to.
I believe you came on here asking about legislation around earth sheltered homes. I have no comprehension of why you have moved from that to anarchism, but hey good luck with the Rebellion, Master Luke.0 -
I don't have enough to afford this yet, but I'm getting close and I'm looking into all of the options and considerations now so that I can get going with it when I do have enough.
The Scottish Highlands is one place I did sleep outdoors, yes it was cold.
It's great that you're building based on your ideals, I respect anyone that does that. I don't force my ideals on anyone, all that I ask is that people don't force their ideals on me. I consider that to be more than fair considering that other people's ideals are a lot more destructive than mine, and yes, it's impossible to be perfect at this point in time but we can do a lot better.
I'm not just shouting I will achieve whatever is achievable in the best place to achieve it. I understand there's many anarchists that are just shouting and can be hypocrites. My lifestyle is as close to my ideals as possible and I'm always seeking to get closer.
I have said time and time again to my husband... imagine what this country would look like if they built using their own minds and ideals instead of everyone elses! This whole country is riddled with hideous red brick cells and Thatcher cement blocks in the cities.
Why does everything have to look the same? Everything should be different, diverse and unique and transcend the person who's house or business it is.
I agree completely with everything you say about society, government and services we pay for and don't use.
Some people can't grasp those of us who don't have TV's, don't have mobile phones, don't need electricity hardly etc.
Though it's like every attempt someone makes to live frugally and free they are forced somewhere down the line to cough up money for something they don't even need/want but law tells them they MUST!

You say that but many/most people seem to want to turn any home that's 'different' into a typical brick box, given half a chance. Makes me a little sad sometimes.

I wonder what happened to the hippie yurt dwelling communities in the 70's.
The idea was to buy some woodland and as long as they moved the yurt a yard or two each year, they were exempt from taxes.
Tipis rather than yurts but a long established community.
