So aside from the lurgified amongst us, are there any party animals going out tonight, or will you all be joining me on the settee with a good film and a blanket/OH/dog (delete as appropriate.)?
Tbh I was never that fussed about NYE, even in my slightly more energetic days- I was generally to be found lurking in the kitchen.

I will join you on the settee with Dumbass Dog, DH and some glass bottles of coke to bring in the New Year.

Back when I was a kid, I lived in what was perceived to be a dodgy area, but there was a huge sense of community. There were a lot of us around the same age and every year there'd be a street party or you'd go first footing with your parents and end up in the last house having an impromptu party. One of my fondest memories was being in my friend's room hearing her mum tunelessly belt out a song on karaoke at top volume and sneaking drinks from the table when nobody was looking. Then people started buying up the houses and complained about the street parties so they stopped, and then people moved away so the first footing stopped.

Now it seems to have gotten all Americanised and you can either pay a fortune to watch some fireworks out in the freezing cold with a plastic bottle of cider, or you can pay to get into a pub who are usually grateful for the custom through the rest of the year. The prices of drinks go up massively too. You can't get a taxi for anything and if you do, it costs more than your night out and everyone is under so much pressure to have the best night ever, that nobody actually is. There are always people so blootered by 10pm that they're puking all over the place and I always seem to end up comforting a random crying girl. It's just...rubbish really.

Visions of a settee with a very large blanket straining to cover you, your OH, the dog and several escapees from this thread! :rotfl:

  • How was Gitdog when you picked him up, elsien?

Needless to say we are staying in and will probably be asleep before midnight. If not, WaSp will be toasting with a bottle of banana bread ale and I will have some flat coke. The partying is relentless...
