I am pretty consumed by this DMP, I spend ALOT of time reading these forums and all the previous DMP threads absorbing as much information as I can. I am in a much better place mentally that I was this time last month when i couldn't see a way out of our debt without selling our home. However I do still feel anxious about what lies ahead, I will keep updating and sure I will have questions for you experienced dmp'ers :-)

This is exactly how I feel! As our DMP doesn't start until September I feel so anxious and so totally consumed by it! My biggest fear at the moment is a charging order. We are resigned that we will get defaults etc (the sooner the better) and that it will take a good few years to get back on track but loosing the house is just unthinkable 😔 We have very young children too and eventually want to move to a bigger place - I worry that we will never be able to.

Yay! Having a number makes me feel less alone - does that sound silly?!

Not at all. A DMP can be a very lonely experience. I haven't told any family and just one close friend. It's just not the sort of thing I wanted others knowing. I felt not ashamed exactly, but just kicking myself for getting into difficulties in the first place. A prize numpty in other words. This thread was a real lifeline when I started out, and knowing that everyone else here is going through the same experience and not judging me for my idiocy was very comforting.

Triangle, you're right. Having a number does that - makes me feel less alone too. I feel like I'm part of the fighting debt army, soldier no. 442

The most important thing that I've found through this experience and chatting with people in similar situations online is that you are not alone, and that it really doesn't matter why we got into difficulties in the first place.

When I first started out my dmp, I felt completely embarrassed about my debt and felt that I couldn't help myself - the banks said no to consolidation loans, I had failed at transferring debts to CCs, the list goes on.

As time has gone on the hopelessness has gone and I realise that by taking out my dmp and dealing with my debt management was a very empowering thing. At first, I didn't tell many people about it, but as time has gone on I have realised just how many people have problem debt, and I'm happy to share my experience with them.

I think the biggest problem people these days face is lenders shoving credit down our throats..

    Sorry, major rant there...

Hello all - just wanted to add some happy news - BC have agreed to stop interest and charges - 2 years after starting my dmp and one year after going self managed (go figure!) - so my lesson for the day is 'never give up' - that means only 2 of 6 creditors still charging interest - and am awaiting responses from them to my recent requests and I and E forms - fingers crossed!

  • Hi everyone can I have a number please? I'm in the process of starting a DMP with SC in September. We have around £30k to clear in total. I have lurked on this thread and found some brilliant advice thank you. It's nice to know there's other people going through the same thing :)

Great post Sazzie - I vote this in for starting off part 11.

Sazzie's post or the DMP member list?

    Or both?

  • I've been lurking for a little while and thanks to the advice given on this forum have set up a DMP. It was such a relief talking to SC that I cried when I got off the phone (my other half didn't realise just how much it had been worrying me)

The reason I decided to do this now is because I'm expecting my first child and don't want to find myself struggling in the New Year when my wages goes down to SMP pay (I will lose a £1000 a month) :(

If all goes to plan I will be DF in just under 5yrs time - something I never thought would happen :)

    Hi Everyone,
So a pile of post this morning as follows:-

MBNA x 2 accounts - accepting DMP payments and freezing interest and charges for duration of agreement as long as these payments are kept up to date. It does say that this offer is not sufficient to stop them registering a default but they will give me 30 days notice. So i presume I will get default notice in next few months maybe......

    Barclays Overdraft
Letter from SC saying they wont accept but not to worry they will still make payments so will contact them myself to explain situation as hadnt done that with actual bank yet.

    Barclayloan
Default Notice - kind of scary as very official looking but suppose i wanted defaults so should be happy......

    Barclaycard
They replied to my email saying they are glad i am speaking to SC and they are waiting to hear from them but will freeze all interest and charges til they do.

Only one yet to hear from is Tesco.
