DMP & Mutual Support Thread - Part 10

supersavershal wrote: »Hi all, not been on for a while. Ive just done my review with stepchange!
Ive been on my DMP for two years, last year I increased my payment by 50 pounds but found it really hard paying 950 pounds a month. This review I did it all exactly as paid, no estimates and now its telling me my payment is now 820 pounds a month and my DMP will take an extra 8 months.
I am so torn as I was finding it difficult, working many extra shifts and feeling exhausted just to make the payment. But now Im really worried my creditors will kick up a fuss and all the telephone calls will start again.
Im not so worried about it taking longer as I have a secured loan of 355 pounds a month that has 18 months to run then I will either save for full and finals or add to my monthly payment.
I am so scared right now not sure I will sleep tonight.
Has anyone else had to reduce their payment and what happened?
Hi SuperS
I had to reduce my DMP payment from £580 to £450 at last years review, mainly due to lack of guaranteed overtime and it was making me sick trying to figure out how to get the extra hours in. No,one batted an eyelid, I think I got one letter saying something like we have noted your revised payment and you must keep this up blah blah and that was it.Scaredofdebt wrote: »Hi everyone. Not been on for a few days but reading through the threads it strikes me just how many people are starting with DMPs and just how much support there is on this forum. I am starting to get my head around it and although still worried I am hoping it will go smoothly. Contacted a couple of creditors so far and they have been helpful, froze account until they hear from SC. However having read an earlier post, I have a question - we have quite a bit of equity in our house, I know about charging orders but can creditors force you in to bankruptcy if they refuse DMP? I am panicking again now.
Hi Scared, yes I was beginning to think everyone with credit cards was getting a DMP but according to the news, personal debt such as credit cards is going up rather than down, so apparently not everyone has seen the light yet:eek:
Re mortgage - some of the old hand DMPers have paid off their mortgages whilst in a DMP. T the best of my knowledge, no one has ever even checked how much equity is in my house (although in truth for me their is very little). And if they did the worst they could do, and is very unlikely - which is put a charging order on it, - so what... It just means if you didn't pay your DMP, they could take action, but you will be paying it so I think they'll probably leave you alone. I suspect a lot of actions such as CCJ and charging orders are reserved for debtors who don't keep I'm touch with their creditors and/or fail to keep up negotiated repayments. So no need,to panic, but it's really tough starting out, and I bet your sleepless nights won't stop just yet, but it will get better. Take a breath, put on a big smile and get ready to face the world with a positive outlook on repaying debt:Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.

And finally for me
As some of the longer term regulars in here may recall, my debts really hit crisis when my partner of 25+ years had to stop working through serious illness. There has then been a long period of change for us with relationship issues, but for the past few months I have been caring for him at home. The many hours I've spent on the forums have often been because I've been up late/early when he's been unwell or I've been worrying.
Anyway to cut a long story short, yesterday he finally passed away. Financially he was my final buffer in case of real emergency, he had no money to speak of but could access credit, and although he didn't make much contribution to the daily household budget, I'm still figuring out the real impact. I've been very fortunate to take time away from work to care for him, and hopefully I'll be able to get back soon and go back to putting in the long hours which will keep me on track for my DFD.

My thoughts are with you Sazzie.
You are an amazing person - to be going through, what must have been, a painful and difficult home life - and still giving advice - and your wonderful post earlier - to other people.
Hope everything works out for you.
